As a Light Equipment Mechanic II, you will play a key role in maintaining and repairing a variety of light vehicles and equipment, including cars, pickup trucks, and more that support vital public services.

The City provides all the tools you need and pays for your required ASE certifications. If the position requires a Commercial Class B Driver’s License, we handle that as well.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Performs skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of light automotive equipment including City cars, pickups, and other light equipment. Performs engine tune-ups and adjustments using standard testing and diagnostic equipment Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains diesel, gas and alternative fuel engines, drive train, brakes, suspension, steering, electrical including electrical systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and related components of transit vehicles and mechanical equipment.

Maintains records of work performed and assists in the training of subordinates. Responds to road calls to repair light automotive and mechanical equipment. Maintains a clean work area and assists with the cleaning of shop areas and equipment.

The current vacancy exists in the General Services Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion.

Education:

Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED completion.

Experience:

Two (2) years of full-time paid experience performing mechanical maintenance AND repairs on diesel, gasoline, and electric powered cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment, or other related vehicles and equipment.

A certification of completion or Associate’s Degree from a recognized vocational, technical, or accredited college or university program in automotive or heavy equipment technology may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.

Special Requirement(s):

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required at the time of application and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in this classification.

Depending on assignment, may be required to obtain a California Commercial Class B Driver's License with required endorsements and without air brake restrictions within twelve (12) months of department request and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in this classification.

Possession at the time of application and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in this classification the following two (2) valid certifications issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in the Automotive & Light Truck (A) Series:

• Steering & Suspension (A4)
• Brakes (A5)

Within twelve (12) months of appointment, incumbents must obtain and maintain throughout the entire term of employment in this classification any additional two (2) ASE certifications in the Automobile & Light Truck (A) Series. Incumbents must take these two (2) certification examinations within the first six (6) months of appointment. Failure to obtain the ASE certifications within twelve (12) months of appointment will be cause for termination from this class.

A Light Equipment Mechanic I may be promoted to Light Equipment Mechanic II as early as six (6) months of experience at the I level upon the recommendation of the appointing authority and possession of the required licenses and certifications as listed on the Light Equipment Mechanic I job specification. Employees hired at the II level will be required to serve the twelve (12) month probationary period at that level.
