The Truck Technician inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains yard trucks, terminal tractors, and related transportation equipment used in the Yard Truck Rental (YGR) operation. This position performs mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, steering, suspension, drivetrain, and preventive maintenance work to keep customer and rental units safe, reliable, and available. This is a safety-sensitive position because the employee may inspect, service, condition, repair, maintain, move, road test, or remain ready to operate commercial motor vehicles.
Employees performing safety-sensitive functions must follow applicable FMCSA, DOT, state, federal, and company safety requirements.
- Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains yard trucks, terminal tractors, and related transportation equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance, DOT-related inspections, fluid services, brake adjustments, tire checks, lighting repairs, and safety-related repairs as assigned.
- Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, air brake, cooling, charging, starting, drivetrain, steering, suspension, and transmission concerns.
- Uses diagnostic tools, service information, wiring diagrams, test equipment, and shop procedures to identify and correct equipment failures.
- Documents labor, parts, diagnostic findings, repair steps, recommendations, and unit condition accurately on repair orders.
- Communicates repair status, parts needs, safety concerns, and additional repair recommendations to service coordination or management.
- Maintains a clean and safe work area and follows company safety procedures, shop policies, environmental requirements, and applicable DOT/FMCSA requirements when performing safety-sensitive functions.
- Performs road tests, yard checks, equipment moves, readiness checks, and final quality checks when qualified and authorized.
- Supports rental readiness by helping prepare, inspect, and repair units before dispatch and after return.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; diesel, truck, automotive, heavy equipment, or technical training preferred.
- Two or more years of truck, diesel, heavy equipment, fleet, yard truck, or related mechanical repair experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air brakes, cooling systems, drive trains, and preventive maintenance procedures.
- Ability to use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, meters, pressure gauges, scan tools, and service information safely and effectively.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required; CDL preferred but not required unless assigned duties require it.
- Ability to lift, move, bend, stand, climb, and work around trucks, trailers, equipment, fluids, tools, and shop conditions safely.
- Ability to read and follow repair instructions, safety procedures, work orders, and parts information.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and commitment to quality repair documentation.
