Under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer, the Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor (Specialist) assists in the research and collection of culvert inventory and assessment data, works with local Highway Maintenance crews to set up traffic control and access, and analyzes data to determine maintenance and repair needs. The incumbent is also responsible for the routine operation and maintenance of inspection vans and other vehicles/equipment in support of the Culvert Inventory Program.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor exam. Those without current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or new to state civil services employment must be on the state examination list.

This is a Limited Term position that may be extended to 24 months or become permanent. The role involves office work and field work across the district, requiring travel district‑wide and occasional statewide travel. Exposure to snakes, poisonous oak, and ticks is likely. Overnight stays may be required for field data collection. Overtime may be required.
Minimum RequirementsMinimum requirements are found in the Class Specification. The position requires a valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license when operating state‑owned or leased vehicles.

- Possession of a valid driver’s license when operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
Failure to submit an SOQ will disqualify candidates. The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages, 12‑point Arial font. The SOQ should address:
- Describe your experience working in the field in construction, maintenance, or operations, or supervising staff.
- Describe your work history and how it has prepared you for this position.
- Describe your work experience and ability using video equipment, GPS equipment, and researching data.

Candidate should be able to work within a team, assist in culvert inventory research and database management, and operate various equipment including computers, video equipment, GPS, rock climbing gear, and vehicles. Familiarity with traffic control and safe work zones is required.
- Valid Class A or Class B commercial driver’s license with P, H, and N endorsements.
- Qualified applicator certificate for pesticides issued by Cal‑EPA (desired).
