POSITION DESCRIPTION
Fresno Area Express (FAX) is operated by the City of Fresno as a public transportation service serving the Fresno Metropolitan Area. Bus Drivers operate passenger coaches on assigned routes and special routes, provide information to passengers, conduct vehicle checks, complete daily reports, and assist passengers, including those with special needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Operate assigned routes to meet schedules; pick up and discharge passengers, verify fare, issue and receive transfers, count riders, and assist passengers as needed.
- Provide public information concerning routes, schedules, transfer points, lost articles, and complete various reports such as daily operation and accident reports.
- Perform pre‑operational checks of coaches for damage or defects in body, tires, lights, mirrors, instruments, brakes, and other equipment, reporting all deficiencies.
- Monitor passenger behavior, contact appropriate personnel regarding transportation problems and concerns in a timely manner to provide quality service.
- Operate passenger coaches on special routes.
- Assist passengers with special needs; load and secure wheelchairs and related medical equipment.
- Instruct new drivers in the operation of passenger coaches in accordance with safety regulations and procedures.
- Perform related duties as required.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of work experience involving direct public contact (e.g., retail, public service).
- Three (3) years of licensed experience operating motor vehicles.
- Current Class C California driver’s license and a complete driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Ability to obtain a Class B license, required endorsements and certificates, and a commercial instruction permit by the end of the training period.
- For at least three (3) years: no suspension, revocation, or probation of a driver’s license; no convictions listed in specific California Vehicle Code sections; no more than one violation among the listed sections.
- Candidates must complete a medical examination, background investigation (including fingerprints), and drug screening.
- Health insurance:

- Deferred compensation: voluntary 457 plan via Fidelity Investments.

- Health reimbursement arrangement for eligible retirees.
- Free bus passes for employees, domestic partners, spouses, dependent children under 18, and disabled children.
- Retirement participation in the City of Fresno Retirement System; eligibility after five years of service; optional deferred retirement option.
Qualified veterans who pass the examination may obtain five (5) additional points. Veterans applying for preference must submit a copy of their DD214 showing honorable discharge. Proof must be resubmitted for every examination in which preference is requested.
