Position Title

Calibration / Metrology Technician – Fridley, Minnesota

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Calibration / Metrology Technician to support the Physical/Dimensional Metrology Laboratory within the Global Quality Excellence organization. The role is based in Fridley, MN and works with the Global Calibration Services – US Midwest region to calibrate and inspect test, inspection, and measurement equipment across the Twin Cities and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Perform calibrations and measurements traceable to NIST and the International System of Units (SI) using properly maintained reference standards.
  • Calibrate and inspect a wide range of test, inspection, and measurement equipment, from general‑purpose physical and dimensional tools to custom‑built sterilizer systems.
  • Support multiple metrology disciplines, including:
    Mass, Temperature, Humidity, Vacuum Length, Optics, Conductivity, Pressure, Dimensional Metrology, Force, Torque, Flow, and others.
  • Create and revise calibration procedures by interpreting manufacturer manuals, laboratory methods, system requirements, and approved documentation.
  • Collaborate with equipment‑owning engineers and technicians to schedule calibration activities, guide equipment selection, and ensure adherence to documented Metrology department procedures.
  • Accurately document calibration results in the calibration tracking database using validated templates and test point grids.
  • Issue Out‑of‑Tolerance (OOT) and Nonconformance (NC) reports as required.
  • Work with data acquisition and validation equipment, including process controllers, chart recorders, DC analog/signal conditioners, and transducers.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, adjust, and repair test and measurement equipment in support of new and existing projects.
  • Provide in‑lab and on‑site calibration support for equipment that is sensitive, immobile, or too large to relocate.
  • Work overtime as needed to support high‑priority requests or project deadlines.
  • Mentor and share technical knowledge with junior technicians and department personnel.
  • Travel to other Medtronic sites within a 20‑mile radius as required.
Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong background in math, statistics, and physics.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Windows OS, and statistical analysis software (e.g., Minitab).
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and blueprint interpretation.
  • Experience developing and validating Microsoft Excel spreadsheet templates.
  • Experience in medical device or other regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with DMAIC problem‑solving methodology.
  • Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize daily tasks and manage multiple work requests.
  • Solid understanding of calibration and measurement principles, including measurement uncertainty, traceability, test accuracy ratios, measurement system analysis, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards such as FDA 21 CFR Part 820 (cGMP), ISO 13485, ISO 10012, ISO 17025.
  • Knowledge of metrology and standards organizations such as NIST, BIPM, NCSL, ASTM, and ASME.
  • Organized, detail‑oriented, process‑driven, and self‑motivation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, professional judgment, and the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2+ years of electronic or physical calibration‑related technical school training (60 semester credits) or equivalent military training (e.g., PMEL).
  • ASQ Certified Calibration Technician.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with Indy Soft or other calibration tracking databases.
Benefits & Compensation

Salary Range (U.S. excluded Puerto Rico): $59,600.00 – $89,400.00.
