Primary Purpose

To provide leadership for improving instruction for students with disabilities through working collaboratively with professional staff, parents, and the community. Coordinators assist in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of special education programs and provide the necessary support to ensure compliance of all policies and procedures related to special education services.

Qualifications

Education/Certification
:
Master’s degree;
Valid Texas teacher’s Special Education certification or licensure in a related field;
Valid Texas administrator certification preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills
:
Understanding of the individual needs of students with disabilities;
Ability to communicate effectively with parents of students with disabilities;
Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data;
Ability to manage budget and personnel;
Ability to coordinate District functions (e.g., professional development)

Ability to provide leadership, supervision, and a positive influence

Experience: Minimum of three years of successful experience as a special education teacher or service provider

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Specially Designed Instruction
:

Serve as an instructional leader and consultant in teaching and learning.

Implement specially designed instruction for academic, functional, and behavioral needs of students.

Engage in continuous analysis of programmatic data to develop and maintain effective services and supports for students with disabilities.

Communicate and advise staff on the implementation of federal, state, and local requirement for the implementation of supports and services for students with disabilities.

Supervision and Support
:

Participate in Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD)/Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings when needed to ensure appropriate placement and development of individual education programs for students according to District procedures.

Collaborate with and guide campus administration and staff regarding the special education process.

Empower and equip staff to engage learners through innovative instructional strategies.

Supervise and appraise staff.

Assist in the recruitment, selection, and training of itinerant personnel and make sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, assignment, and retention.

Assist in compiling budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.

Policy and Procedure
:

Keep informed of and interpret current laws, regulations, statutes, rules, policies, and trends in the various fields, and disseminate professional information and materials to administrators and staff.

Guide staff on disability and service/support determination procedures and protocols based on federal, state, and local requirements for students with disabilities.

Monitor, audit, and submit compliance information related to federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Share in the responsibility for ensuring confidentiality of student records.

Communication and Community Relations
:

Maintain an effective working relationship with staff, students, parents, and members of the community.

Promote a culture of shared leadership, collaboration, and high expectations for all.

Facilitate effective resolution of conflicts in a timely manner.

Utilize effective verbal and written communication regarding the District and department’s mission and program goals to District and community stakeholders.

Display emotional intelligence in the areas of self-awareness, empathy, motivation, self-regulation, and social skills.

Professional Learning
:

Prepare and provide meaningful professional learning opportunities for District and campus administrators, general and special education teachers, paraprofessionals, parents and/or the community to enhance their knowledge and understanding of special education.

Represent Special Education Department Leadership in District and regional meetings.

Commit to continual growth through collaboration and individualized professional learning.
