The Multispecialty Sonographer performs basic to advanced ultrasound services, including abdominal, Ob/Gyn, cardiac, vascular, musculoskeletal, and small parts examinations. The role involves reviewing the patient's clinical history, framing necessary questions, and expanding the examination as required to provide accurate imaging results.
Essential Functions OfThe Role
- Performs various specialty ultrasound procedures using different equipment and techniques, making necessary measurements for accurate and high-quality interpretation results.
- Identifies and defines abnormalities specific to the procedure, extends the examination scope appropriately, and correlates other diagnostic test results with anatomy and function while using appropriate protection measures.
- Might assist physicians in procedure and operating rooms by performing ultrasound studies to aid in complex procedures and reduce risk.
- Prepares patients for procedures, obtains clinical history, tailors imaging techniques, explains the purpose of the examination, and answers patient questions.
- Follows policies, procedures, and workflows including PACS, EMR, image exchange systems, modality worklist integrity, record management, and Bio Med services.
- Records statistics, performs daily maintenance of the ultrasound lab and its equipment, and reports all malfunctions as appropriate.
- Acts as a resource to team members, physicians, and students regarding equipment, techniques, procedures, and studies to optimize patient care.
- Works closely with ultrasound team members to ensure quality processes and protocol compliance, assists with unit or organization accreditation activities as delegated.
- Implements protocols as new technology evolves, ensuring adherence to system standards.
- Assures operation of equipment by performing quality checks following manufacturer’s recommendations and troubleshooting equipment as required.
- Must be familiar with approved clinical protocols for each type of ultrasound examination to be performed.
- Must meet all qualifications for any two of these specialties:
Ob/Gyn, cardiac, vascular, musculoskeletal, or small parts, working at least 25% of the time in the second modality. - Knowledge and ability to apply complex sonographic methods, instrumentation, and techniques.
- Knowledge of relevant anatomy and physiology for each specialty.
- Knowledge of proper infection control, including precautionary procedures.
- Knowledge of relevant laws regarding patient confidentiality and privacy.
- Effective oral and written communication with healthcare providers, including other sonographers, physicians, and nurses.
- Skilled in the utilization of computers and medical equipment.
- Ability to serve as a trainer, providing quality training to new team members and on new services and initiatives.
- Ability to take call, if required.

Qualifications- EDUCATION – Graduate of an Accredited Program.
- EXPERIENCE – 2 Years of Experience.
- Fetal Echocardiography (FE), Musculoskeletal Sonography (MSK), Reg Diag Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Reg Dig Card Son‑Adult Echo (RDCS‑AE), Ped. Echocardiography (PE) (RDCS‑PE), Reg Diag Medical Sonographer (RDMS), Reg Diag Med Sono‑Abdomen (AB) (RDMS‑AB), Reg Diag Med Sono‑Breast (BR) (RDMS‑BR), Reg Diag Med Sono‑OB/GYN (OB) (RDMS‑OB), RDMS‑Pediatric Sonography (PS) (RDMS‑PS), Registered Vascular Tech (RVT).
- ARDMS in (AB) or (OB) or RVT (ARDMS):
Must have 2 years of related Multispecialty Experience.
- ARDMS – RDMS: AB, , OB/GYN, PS; OR RDMS – RDCS: AE, FE, PE; OR ARDMS – RVT; OR ARDSM – RMSKS; OR ARRT – S, VS, BS.
- Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
