Job Summary and QualificationsThe Licensed Surgical Assistant (LSA) or Certified Frist Assist (CFA) provides assistance to the surgeon or group of surgeons during an operative procedure as a first or second assistant providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. This position will also serve in the Operating Room Scrub Technician role as required or directed based on patient and surgeon needs.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:Provides wound exposure through proper use of retractors so surgeon may clearly view operative site.
Completes skin preparation and draping
Through use of suction and sponges, provides a dry field of operation to permit optimum vision of tissue, viscera, vessels, etc.
Provides hemostasis by use of clamps, cautery, ligation
Completes partial wound closure subcutaneous tissues and skin only as directed by the surgeon.
Applies in application of special dressings such as circumferential elastic bandages and taping
Assists in transfer of patient to bed or cart and transports patient to PACU as necessary.
Reports any unusual incidents to circulating nurse
Handles specimens according to policy
Assists in dismantling tables and instruments after procedure
Assembles special operating tables such as fracture tables, positioning devices
Assumes other tasks of a similar nature or level of responsibility when assigned by supervising physician.
Responsible for knowledge of operating room policies and procedures.
Participate in in services and staff meetings
Participates in development of skills of OR staff
Attendance and being on time, ready to work your scheduled hours is an essential job function.
Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
(CSA) Certified Surgical Assistant, or (CSFA) Certified Surgical First Assistant
2 years experience Required Years of Experience
Licensed as a CST by the Association of Surgical Technologists and/or equivalent or higher education in surgery
CFA Certification through NBSTSA, ABSA or AST; BLS
Ability to listen, interact and communicate verbally and in writing. Hospital and medical terminology preferred. Computer skills with ability to update preference cards. Demonstrates surgical anatomy and physiology knowledge base and surgical technique related to first assisting. Competency in Intra-Op behavior such as tissue handling, providing instruments, suturing, and controlling blood loss. Application of asepsis and infection control. Ability to recognize surgical hazards and ability to initiate appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
