Overview
Principle/Senior/Landscape Architect in Frisco, TX. Under general supervision of the Director of Planning, administers the Landscape and Tree Preservation Ordinances, reviews development plans for landscaping, tree preservation, irrigation and tree surveys and conducts surveys and field inspections. Supervises assigned department staff.
The intent of this description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position. Incumbents may not be required to perform all duties listed and may perform position-related tasks not specifically listed.
Essential Job Functions- Reviews and interprets landscape plans, irrigation plans and tree surveys for compliance with City landscaping and tree preservation policies, ordinances and codes.
- Approves landscaping, tree preservation and development plans for City departments and customers.
- Promotes tree preservation in site design and in the preparation of development plans submitted by architects, engineers, developers and property owners.
- Conducts field inspections to verify compliance with the tree preservation and landscape ordinances.
- Responds to citizen, City official and department inquiries and complaints related to Landscape and Tree Preservation Ordinances.
- Prepares landscape and tree preservation ordinance updates to City Council, Boards and Commissions.
- Develops educational and informational programs and presentations to promote tree preservation in the City of Frisco.
- Assists property owners by providing screening and landscaping suggestions including financial impact to the owner.
- Conducts tree surveys on proposed land development to determine what areas can be developed or must be set aside for preservation of existing trees.
- Determines the quality and condition of existing trees for possible relocation or destruction.
- Required Knowledge and
Skills:
Knowledge of landscape architecture, tree preservation and water conservation methods, practices and procedures. - Knowledge of the growth, utilization, and environmental impact of native and non-native trees and other landscaping shrubbery.
- Knowledge of development, revision and enforcement of Federal, State, regional and City codes, ordinances and regulations related to landscape architecture and tree preservation.
- Knowledge of design and development techniques for creating promotional, educational and informational presentations, advertisements, brochures and materials.
- Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware and software for development and enforcement of plan reviews, activity reports, databases and noncompliance issues.
- Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
- Skill in effective oral and written communications.
- Skill in conducting inspections and investigations and enforcing codes and regulations.
- Skill in resolving difficult, unusual or original situations with alternative solutions, innovative and creative suggestions and designs.
- Skill in reviewing, proposing and designing architectural and plat development plans that implement City ordinances, codes and long term plans.
- Skill in effectively supervising and delegating duties to assigned staff.
- Skill in mediating, negotiating and resolving customer complaints and concerns.
- Education, Experience, and
Certifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Arboricultural, or Environmental Conservation or related field, and ten (10) years landscape architecture or conservation/preservation design experience, or a Master's Degree, and five (5) years of landscape architecture or conservation/preservation experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Must possess Licensed Landscape Architect or Arborist certifications.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and/or post-offer physical exam.
- Must possess State of Texas Driver's License.
Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in office and field environments.
- May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry and vision to monitor.
- May be subject to exposure to poisonous vegetation, animals or reptiles, heights when climbing and inspecting trees and forested areas or traversing undeveloped areas proposed for development.
- May be subject to extended periods of walking, bending, reaching, standing, and lifting when reviewing proposed development plans, landscape, tree preservation surveys, and irrigation plans and designs, or inspecting construction sites at different phases of development.
- May be exposed to hostile or angry citizens, project developers and homeowners.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
