Do you enjoy building production‑grade AI systems from the ground up? Thomson Reuters is looking for a Senior Software Engineer (Legal) who will design, develop, and deploy AI‑driven solutions for law firms and corporate legal teams. The role involves deep collaboration with legal professionals, AI engineers, and cross‑functional partners to deliver high‑impact, production‑ready systems.
Responsibilities- Act as the primary liaison between legal professionals (client facing and internal experts) and engineering, translating needs into viable technical solutions.
- Collaborate with AI and product teams to break down customer requirements into actionable tasks.
- Develop secure, scalable software by following the software development lifecycle, including system specification, documentation, unit testing (TDD), CI/CD, and infrastructure‑as‑code.
- Evaluate non‑deterministic AI outputs for legal accuracy, relevance, and reliability, and apply advanced prompt/loop engineering to optimize performance.
- Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, coaching, and training on modern technologies, including legal‑domain AI applications.
- Lead routine Agile/Scrum projects, delivering end‑to‑end technical solutions for multiple products or complex legal projects.
- Work in a hybrid setting with occasional travel to client sites.
- JD or formal legal training, or equivalent depth of legal practice experience with fluency in legal terminology.
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, proficient in Python and a proven track record of building production‑grade software.
- Strong understanding of AI/LLM evaluation methodologies and prompt engineering for specialized legal tasks.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging lawyers and engineers on both technical and legal topics.
- Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, and present at client workshops or knowledge‑sharing sessions.
- Growth mindset, adaptability in a fast‑paced environment, and experience mentoring others within Agile/Scrum frameworks.
- Experience with legal platforms or SaaS solutions is a plus.
The position is based in multiple U.S. locations (such as New York City , San Francisco, Los Angeles, IrvineCA, McLeanVA, WashingtonDC) with a compensation range of $94,900–$176,300
