Job Overview
The Registered Professional Nurse (RN I) is responsible for effectively carrying out the nursing process—including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management—while ensuring quality communication, teamwork, and leadership/professionalism. The RN I directs, coordinates, and implements patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel, maintaining professional nursing standards.
Responsibilities- Carry out the full nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management).
- Ensure quality communication, teamwork, and professionalism.
- Direct, coordinate, and implement patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel.
- Act as Charge Nurse and participate in department initiatives.
- Communicate and share information with the Director/Designee and co‐workers from unit or hospital committees.
- Attend paid education, seminars, conferences, workshops, or courses provided by Valley Health.
- Maintain an up‑to‑date professional practice ladder portfolio and submit it annually by March 1st.
- Solicit and validate patient/family satisfaction; participate in peer review for the unit.
- Develop bulletin boards or posters that provide educational information to staff, patients, and family members.
- Competent in providing care based on the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological stages of human growth and development.
- Competent in utilizing the nursing process to provide patient care.
- Reliable means of phone communication with the hospital.
- If an RN begins employment as an RN I or is promoted to an RN I from any VH position, must secure an Eligibility to Test Letter from the Virginia Board of Nursing (or equivalent proof) if a Virginia resident or non‑compact state resident.
Associate’s degree in Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN, or ADN) is required. A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
Certification & Licensures- RN License is required. Must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure as a Registered Nurse in Virginia under the Nurse Licensure Compact or a single‑state license valid in Virginia only.
- BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) – American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) – AHA approved is required. New hires must hold AHA certification prior to completing orientation.
