Location of PositionCentral Maryland Correctional Facility, Maryland Correctional Institution-Jessup, Carroll County, Anne Arundel County. Multiple locations available. Applicants should indicate all locations in which they are willing to work.
Main Purpose of the JobCorrectional Maintenance Officer I is responsible for the custody, security, and supervision of incarcerated individuals while performing maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not have supervisory responsibility for other employees and receive close supervision from a Correctional Maintenance Officer Supervisor (CMOS).
Position Duties- Maintain control and discipline among incarcerated individuals.
- Conduct searches for contraband items.
- Administer verbal or written disciplinary actions for any violations of conduct standards.
- Enforce safety, sanitary, custody, and security rules and regulations.
- Assign installation, maintenance, or repair tasks to designated incarcerated individuals.
- Train and instruct incarcerated individuals regarding methods and techniques, use of tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.
- Inspect and approve or disapprove all work performed by incarcerated individuals for adherence to quality standards.
- Estimate time, materials, and supplies needed to conduct assigned maintenance or repair tasks.
- Order supplies and materials needed; keep records of tools, supplies, and materials used.
- Perform certain installation, maintenance, or repair tasks on plumbing infrastructure.
- Plan and implement appropriate procedures, operating hand and power tools and equipment.
- Escort third‑party vendors and inspect completed work assignments.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent accepted by the Maryland State Board of Education.
- Two years of maintenance or mechanic experience.
- Substitution:
Two years of U.S. Armed Forces military experience in correctional or criminal‑justice work may replace required experience.
Employees may be required to operate a motor vehicle and must possess a valid Maryland driver’s license before permanent appointment. Successful completion of the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course during the probationary period is required.
Special Requirements- U.S. Citizenship or resident alien status.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Completed background investigation.
- Oral interview, physical examination.
- 24‑hour availability via telephone.
- Substance‑abuse testing in accordance with state regulations.
Applicants must complete the Entry Level Training Program at the Training Academy through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC). Upon graduation, individuals are assigned to facilities throughout Maryland. Candidates shall indicate all counties where they are willing to work. The certified eligible list is valid for two years.
