the department of modern languages and literatures at csu fullerton invites applications for its part-time lecturer pool in japanese to teach undergraduate courses in japanese language, culture, literature, linguistics and/or film (beginners to advanced learners).

areas of specialization
we are seeking highly motivated, well-organized individuals to teach in at least two of the following subject areas:

• japanese language, introductory to advanced
• japanese culture, intermediate to advanced
• japanese literature, intermediate to advanced
• japanese linguistics, intermediate to advanced

this is a pool of part-time lecturers for the department to draw on as necessary. Qualified applicants will be contacted when positions are available.

appointments from the part-time pool are temporary and often made just prior to the start of the academic term. Applicants must be available on very short notice.

required qualifications

• candidates must hold at least a master's degree in japanese, asian studies, or a related field and possess native-like fluency in japanese to teach lower-division (100- and 200-level) courses, must be at least a ph.d. Candidate (abd) in japanese, asian studies, or a related field and possess native-like fluency in japanese in order to teach 300-level courses, and must hold a ph.d. In japanese, asian studies, or a related field and possess native-like fluency in japanese in order to teach 400-level courses.
• candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, including first-generation college students.
• this position requires the legal right to work in the united states of america. California state university, fullerton cannot sponsor part-time faculty for work visas or permanent residence.
• candidates must reside in the state of california at the time of hiring. This requirement cannot be waived, even for online courses.

preferred qualifications

• preference will be given to candidates with prior teaching experience at the college or university level and who can furnish evidence of strong teaching
• preference will also be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.
• preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

appointment date and academic calendar

the need for part-time faculty is greatest in fall and spring semesters. The fall term begins in the late august and ends in mid-december; the spring term runs from the middle of january through the end of may. On rare occasions part-time faculty are needed during one of the summer session segments.

performance evaluation

regular performance evaluations of part-time lecturers are made by the department in accord with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and university policy statement 210.070. These performance evaluations determine which lecturers will be retained for future and continued teaching assignments. And in some instances, syllabi, assignments and reading material will be reviewed by the departmental personnel committee.
