Assistant Professor, Asian American Studies (with an emphasis in Asian American or Pacific Islander/Native Pacific Studies)
The Department of Asian American Studies (ASAM) at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) invites applications for a tenure‑track position at the rank of Assistant or Advanced Assistant Professor, with an appointment to begin Fall 2026. The advanced rank may include up to two years of service credit toward the normal six‑year probationary period.
PositionWe seek a teacher‑scholar of ethnic studies or related fields with an emphasis in Asian American or Pacific Islander/Native Pacific studies. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach introductory and core courses in Asian American and ethnic studies, develop courses in their area of specialization, and produce scholarship or creative work commensurate with tenure requirements. In addition, the faculty member will advise students, serve on departmental and university‑wide committees, participate in community work, and contribute to the life and development of the department and the broader university community.
Responsibilities- Develop and teach introductory and core courses in Asian American studies and ethnic studies.
- Create and teach courses within the faculty member’s area(s) of specialization.
- Contribute to the department, advise students, and serve on committees.
- Engage in community work and broader university endeavors.
- Ph.D. in ethnic studies or related field, with an emphasis in Asian American or Pacific Islander/Native Pacific studies, by the time of appointment.
- Ability to teach a broad range of Asian American studies and ethnic studies courses.
- Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching.
- Strong record of scholarly or creative accomplishments appropriate to the level of appointment.
- Demonstrated commitment to department/university, professional, and community service.
- Experience working collaboratively with colleagues.
- Ability to balance teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service.
- Commitment to working effectively with students from intersecting marginalized social groups.
- Emphasis in history; cultural studies (literature, digital/media studies, music); colonialism, empire, and war; queer of color theories; women of color feminist theories; diaspora; and/or community and social movements.
- Interdisciplinary, intersectional and/or comparative approaches.
- Evidence of effective use of a variety of instructional methods and learning modalities.
- Evidence of successful scholarly or creative work and publications.
- Evidence of engagement with student co‑curricular activities and Asian American or Pacific Islander/Native Pacific communities.
- Cover letter addressing the required and/or preferred qualifications.
- Curriculum vitae.
- 500‑word maximum teaching statement describing experience and philosophy.
- 500‑word maximum research statement describing current and future projects.
- 500‑word maximum service statement describing experience and interests.
- 500‑word maximum statement on commitment to inclusive excellence.
- Evidence of teaching excellence (e.g., sample syllabi, teaching peer observations, professional development training).
- One writing sample (ABD applicants to provide a minimum of two dissertation chapters).
- A list of three references with relevant contact information.
- Letters of recommendation for semi‑finalists and finalists as specified by the search committee.

Compensation and BenefitsThe Assistant Professor (Academic Year) salary range is $6,221 to $13,224 per month with an anticipated hiring range of $7,465 to $7,608 per month. Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional benefits include health, vision, and dental plans; spouse, domestic partner, and dependent fee waivers; campus child‑care access; and a defined‑benefit retirement through the state system.
