As a Design Contractor Planning Senior Specialist at Southern California Edison (SCE), you will oversee and prepare complex electrical designs for multiple internal organizations, work with design contract partners, and mentor and lead Planning Associates and Designers.
Responsibilities- Conduct long‑term grid import planning analyses and transmission interconnection assessments, managing large design projects from inception to construction completion.
- Support the company’s electrical distribution system by developing and designing plans, identifying required resources, and providing cost estimates for the construction of distribution facilities.
- Make decisions that directly impact project scope, timeline, and budget.
- Perform field inspections to gather data for planning and development review, ensuring compliance with approved plans.
- Assess the capabilities of the regional distribution system and its compliance with planning criteria.
- Conduct power‑flow studies, build models, and prepare economic analyses to develop short‑ and long‑term distribution system plans.
- Ensure distribution system performance meets reliability targets and analyze outages for cause, trends, and duration.
- Coordinate activities with other internal personnel and/or organizations to ensure policy compliance and appropriate follow‑through of procedures and completion dates for assigned projects.
- Stay current on industry practices, standards, and customer needs, interacting with a diverse customer base to deliver successful outcomes.
- Provide training and support, assessing and managing workload when necessary.
- Safeguard the company’s physical, financial, and cybersecurity assets by handling private customer data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.
- Three or more years of experience in Electrical Utility Distribution/Transmission/Telecommunication Design, Line Construction, or a related Engineering discipline.
- Valid Class C driver’s license.
- Proven ability to apply engineering principles, construction standards, and industry practices.
- Experience determining scope of work, method of service, and overhead/underground construction methods.
- Proficiency with wind/pole loading applications, drafting systems, GIS, or related design systems (e.g., SPIDA Calc, Autodesk AUD, cGIS, SAP).
- Experience preparing work orders, construction plans, or project packages.
- Ability to manage multiple technical or customer projects under shifting priorities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across teams, including clients, peers, management, and agencies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The position is hybrid, with a set number of days required at an SCE facility and the option to work remotely on remaining days; employees must reside in California unless otherwise noted.
- The primary work location is the Fullerton Service Center (Fullerton, CA), though the successful candidate may be asked to work at alternate locations and will be required to travel up to 25% of the time within the SCE service territory.
- Working arrangements may include a 9/80 alternate work schedule or a standard 40‑hour week.
- Relocation does not apply to this position.
- Applicants will be invited to testing (e.g., EEI TECH Test #5107) during the selection process.
- From July 1, 2025, this position is represented by ESC Local 20; employment terms may be affected by collective bargaining negotiations.
