Apex (CWE, an Apex Company) is seeking a Design Engineer I – Water Resources to join our headquarters in Fullerton, California. The role focuses on designing civil and water infrastructure projects, supporting project teams from concept through construction documentation, and ensuring compliance with engineering standards and client deliverables.
Responsibilities- Prepare project concepts through final design plans, specifications, and estimating (PS&E) bid packages.
- Solve design problems using engineering calculations and industry standards.
- Create complete engineering reports for civil site improvements, storm drainage, water distribution and transmission systems, pumping systems, pipelines, utilities, streets, roads, bikeways, sanitary sewer systems, and wastewater facilities.
- Produce design drawings in AutoCAD Civil 3D, establishing horizontal and vertical alignments, profiles, cross sections, and performing earthwork calculations.
- Serve on project teams under the supervision of CWE Project Managers and complete assignments on time and within budget.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary and multi‑office teams.
- Assist technical staff with research, data compilation, calculations, and report preparation.
- Support project administration, including drafting reports, proposals, correspondence, tracking costs, and progress reports.
- Conduct research and contact vendors or agencies for information.
- Assist with field activities, material testing, CADD work, permit applications, and report writing.
- Manage personal task schedules, meet deadlines, and maintain project scope.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) / Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) in progress or completed.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project).
- Experience with ESRI Arc Map, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or related geospatial software.
- Proficiency in PDF software such as Bluebeam or Adobe Acrobat.
- Ability to learn new software and technologies quickly.
- High attention to detail and strong work ethic.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Self‑motivation, multi‑tasking, prioritizing, and the ability to work independently.
- Proactive, self‑starter, and takes initiative.
- Physical ability to kneel, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Valid California driver’s license and insurable driving record.
- Master’s or PhD in a related field.
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) / Fundamentals of Engineering (FE).
- California Professional Engineer (PE) registration in Civil Engineering.
- Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) designation.
- Membership in professional practice organizations such as ASCE, ACEC, or APWA.
- Involvement in outreach or community service activities.
