Your Role on the Team

The position of Nurse Practitioner II in the Department of Urology is a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented role, immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care for the various divisions of the Department of Urology.

Duties include assessing health needs, planning and evaluating care of all patients on the urology services. The nurse practitioner will participate in inpatient sign out at the beginning and end of shift, follow up with the Urology teams, residents, and attending physicians, and be involved in performing surgical consultations on potential urology surgery patients.

Responsibility for care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations and interventional procedures) and follow‑up, obtaining consults as needed, and discharging patients with summary, instructions, and medications when appropriate. Triage phone calls. Responsible for reviewing critical labs, following up on results with patients and medical staff, obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and periodic physical examinations and assessments, and exploring patients’ interpretation of health needs.

Incumbent will identify and treat patients and manage treatment of hospitalized patients. The NP demonstrates an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation.

Under the joint supervision of the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and the Urology Medical Directors, and guided by the applicable policies and procedures, the Nurse Practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multidisciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.

A Nurse Practitioner is an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide advanced nursing care in their area of specialization.

Functions as appropriate to their scope of practice (in general, the scope of practice includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per approved standardized procedure). Familiarity with state statute for their licenses is necessary.

• Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
• Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.

• Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.

• Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
• Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
• Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
• Educational training and/or experience to support setting and patient population.
• Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
• Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
• Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.
• Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
• Certification:
  Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG (beginning February 2018).
• Current BLS & ACLS certification.
• Must have at least 6 months working NP experience.
