Physical Science Instructor/ Lab Coordinator
The Physical Science Instructor/ Lab Coordinator splits their time between instructing science courses and coordinating Physical Science labs. Instruction responsibilities include instruction of Physical Science courses through classroom, laboratory, dual enrollment, and distance-learning settings across multiple campuses and schedules. Lab Coordinator responsibilities for ensuring that all aspects of the Physical Science laboratories are properly equipped and maintained. This position provides instructions as needed to assist the Chemistry and Physics Faculty for all in-person labs.
This position is responsible for safety, proper storage and disposal and maintenance of all materials used by the Chemistry and Physics Departments. This role reports directly to the Division Chair of Science. Direct Supervisory Responsibility: NO
Instructional Duties
Instruct courses as assigned.
Conduct instruction in a wide variety of settings and time frames to include day, evening, and weekends on any of Gadsden State's campuses. Some traveling may be required.
Present appropriate and effective classroom and laboratory learning experiences to students in a classroom, lab, or distance-learning format, including computer delivery.
Assist in the planning for instruction: prepare course materials, objectives, syllabi, and curriculum design, and course scheduling process.
Participate in assessments at both the course and program levels.
Assist students out of class in their quest to master information presented.
Incorporate various teaching methods, including the use of technology-based instruction, critical thinking activities, and experiences in all courses.
Laboratory Duties
Organize, maintain, and inventory Chemistry, Physics and Physical Science laboratory supplies.
Coordinate with chemistry and physics faculty to determine lab needs.
Order lab supplies for Chemistry, Physics and Physical Science courses.
Coordinate with faculty in setting up and taking down assigned chemistry and physics labs in accordance with the design for experiments.
Prepare and maintain chemical reagents as required for Chemistry lab procedures.
Ensure and facilitate proper storage and disposal of chemicals, including hazardous materials.
Maintain computers in Chemistry and Physics labs with any needed information and software.
Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, troubleshooting and repairing equipment as necessary.
Assist faculty in developing new laboratory procedures for classes.
Faculty Duties
Post and maintain regular office hours.
Assist in support of adjunct instructors.
Serve on College committees.
Attend meetings, training sessions, College events, and graduation.
Serve as faculty advisor to an assigned group of students.
Serve as faculty sponsor to student organizations as assigned.
Pursue continued professional development.
Comply with all policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Chemistry OR Physics OR Geology, OR a closely related field from an approved U.S. Department of Education accredited institution required, PhD preferred.
One (1) year experience in laboratory work and maintenance required.
Experience in chemistry or physics laboratory setting preferred.
