TITLE: School Nurse (RN)

STATUS: Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

Registered Nurse with a valid Alabama license.

Current CPR certification

Bachelors or Associate degree from an accredited nursing school.

Valid Alabama driver's license.

Provide own or have access to appropriate transportation to meet job requirements.

Experience as a registered nurse and experience setting up health programs. Previous experience as a school nurse or working with children preferred.

REPORTS TO: Principal / Lead Nurse

SUPERVISES: N/A

JOB GOAL: To provide services to schools that work toward good health and wellness of students and the improvement of health conditions.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide, but not limited to, direct student/patient care which includes first aid care, administering medication, performing invasive procedures and specific tasks that require independent nursing judgment or intervention.

Provide, but not limited to, health appraisal of students and make necessary referrals in the areas of vision, hearing, dental, physical disability, and scoliosis, according to the health services policies and procedures.

Administer medication according to school and system policies.

Obtain information from student's past and present health history, utilizing all available sources of information. ALL information must be entered correctly into Power School, including health history information, any medications kept at school (MAR), all screenings (scoliosis, hearing, vision), and visits to the nurse office.

Medication counts must be correct & match on MAR, Power School, count sheets, and in medication bottle.

Enter & monitor each student's immunizations in Immprint, ensuring that current students are up to date in Immprint (active/inactive, correct grade). Notify parents if an immunization is needed.

Registered Nurses complete and follow health care plans and emergency action plans for students and review at least annually in accordance of state guidelines.

Monitors medications and other materials and supplies for expiration dates.

Supervises LPN 's as necessary by co-signing health care plans, medication counts, and any skills they perform.

Prepare all required reports for supervisor, Board of Education, health department, and State Department of Education as required and maintain all appropriate records.

Provide training for medication assistants and evaluate their performance in compliance with policies, procedures, and guidelines in the administration of medication to students.

Review health records and immunization slips for compliance.

Assist school personnel with completion of incident/accident reports.

Follow attendance, punctuality, and proper dress rules.

Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace/student matters.

Keep principal and lead nurse informed of potential problems or unusual events.

Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.

Perform any other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the lead nurse or principal.
