General Statement of JobThe elementary special education teacher in a self‑contained classroom provides specialized instruction and support for students in grades K‑2 with significant academic, behavioral, and adaptive needs. The teacher delivers instruction in functional and standards‑based academics, social‑emotional and behavioral skills, communication, and personal care/hygiene. The teacher serves as case manager for assigned students, supervises paraprofessionals, and ensures implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and behavior plans in a structured, safe learning environment.
Reports to the principal.
- Provides direct, specially designed instruction in reading, math, writing, communication, social skills, and functional academics aligned to IEP goals and state standards.
- Provides instruction and support in adaptive skills including hygiene, toileting, feeding, dressing, and independence as outlined in IEPs.
- Maintains a structured, predictable classroom environment with visual schedules, routines, and supports.
- Serves as case manager for assigned students and ensures all IEPs are implemented with fidelity.
- Develops, reviews, and updates IEPs and progress monitoring data according to district and state timelines.
- Supervises and directs paraprofessionals and ensures proper implementation of student supports.
- Collaborates with general education teachers, related service providers, and families.
- Maintains accurate and compliant documentation in district/state systems.
- Provides safe supervision of students at all times including transitions, lunch, recess, and transportation.
- Implements health plans and follows medical protocols as required.
- Uses evidence‑based instructional practices and collects data to guide instruction.
- Maintains confidentiality of student records and information.
- Participates in required meetings, professional development, and trainings.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or administration.
- Begins class promptly and maintains structured routines.
- Communicates and reinforces expected behaviors.
- Implements positive behavior supports and de‑escalation strategies.
- Ensures student safety and supervision at all times.
- Maintains a classroom climate conducive to learning and development.
