Middle School Band Director
The Band Director is the primary instructional delivery person and provides each student with varied opportunities to learn about and enjoy music experiences as a performer and/or listener. The position is demanding, varied and complex. The educator must be collaborative, a relationship builder, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be well trained in various instrument knowledge, early learners, and effective and engaging teaching strategies.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesEssential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm with a genuine passion for teaching young learners.
- Administers the school's band program.
- Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
- Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
- Establishes and maintains within Board Policy and Administrative procedures, standards of pupil behavior that will provide an orderly productive environment during rehearsals and performances.
- Evaluates each pupil's musical growth and performance, assessing each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.
- Selects and requisitions music, musical instruments and instructional aids and maintains required inventory records.
- Communicates with parents on pupil progress.
- Provides musical programs for a variety of school events and civic functions at the request of the supervising Principal and/or Superintendent.
- Participates in those functions and activities as described in the regular teacher job description.
- Maintains a professional awareness of current literature relating to assignments, including working knowledge of state and federal law, Board policy and Administrative regulations.
- Obtains approval from the Principal for all fund‑raising activities.
- Obtains Principal's approval in advance for all trips and contests.
All students must be under supervision of certified personnel at all times. All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment at all times.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities – Essential Job Functions- Has a prepared lesson plan that is sufficient for instructing lessons for grades 6 through 8.
- Exercises proper care of materials and equipment.
- Communicates needs of the classroom to the proper personnel.
- Arrives for work at the assigned hour and does not leave before the assigned time.
- Communicates appropriately and effectively with other staff members, parents, students, and with administration.
- Accepts assistance, advice, and guidance from people responsible for supervising his/her performance and makes a concerted effort toward improving or refining skills.
- Shares ideas, plans, materials, and facilities.
- Alert to the district's, school's, and his/her own goals and priorities and seeks professional development appropriate to these needs.
- Keeps in confidence information that has been obtained in the course of professional service, unless disclosure serves professional purpose or is required by law.
- The teacher, in his/her association with others, respects the rights, feelings, and differences among individuals, and communicates directly with the person(s) involved in any situation.
- While exercising his/her contractual responsibilities, complies with those state and local restrictions pertaining to the use of controlled substances, tobacco products, alcohol, and dress.
- Does not verbally or physically harass students.
- Does not use profanity in the presence of students.
- Does not have any sexual contact with students.
