Operations Manager, Program / Project Manager
Nearly a quarter of the global population lacks access to clean water, and even more live without safe sanitation solutions like toilets or latrines. Billions also face life-threatening challenges due to the absence of basic healthcare technologies. Design Outreach (DO) is a Christian humanitarian engineering organization committed to solving these global challenges through the development of innovative and context-appropriate technologies in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) and Global Health sectors.
Position:
Reporting to the Engineering Solutions Director, the WASH Program Manager will oversee the WASH Engineering Solutions team and actively manage product development projects using the DO Way for Appropriate Technology Development. The role includes research, user needs development, design, engineering, lab and field testing, manufacturing, and field support; high collaboration across DO’s project teams and key suppliers; and ensuring completion of project objectives within scope, budget, and schedule.
- Oversee the DO Way process for new and existing WASH technologies (research, design, analysis, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, documentation, risk management)
- Lead and provide accountability for the WASH Engineering Solutions team, supervising Team Leads and senior team members
- Program planning for product development and production (timelines, resource plans, budgets)
- Identify and mitigate risks, resolve issues, and manage changes to scope or schedule
- Facilitate regular reviews and status updates with leadership and cross-functional teams
- Maintain positive collaboration with advisors, partners, and suppliers
- Collaborate with Stewardship on fundraising initiatives and donor relationships
- Collaborate with Field Programs (including Malawi and Zambia) to field test and implement new technologies (international travel once per year required)
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards

- Strong problem-solving, leadership, negotiation, and communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Commitment to 40 hours/week; work from office in Columbus, Ohio; ability to travel domestically and internationally
- Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field
- 10+ years leading product development programs/projects
- 3+ years managing technical or project management staff
- PMP or equivalent experience
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with executive leadership, direct reports, and partners
