As an Accounting Professional for the City of Gainesville, you will prepare financial reports, maintain accounting procedures, and recommend system improvements.

Salary Range

Minimum: $60,403.20

Maximum: $97,623.17

Responsibilities
  • Review and recommend changes to accounting procedures and policies to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Study existing accounting methods to ensure conformity with standard operating policy.
  • Develop and modify detailed accounting procedures, policies, and systems to meet changing City requirements.
  • Advise department heads and officers on accounting policies, interpreting and applying them to City functions.
  • Manage production of the City’s Schedule of Expenditures for Federal Awards (SEFA) and support the Single audit.
  • Provide oversight and guidance for citywide Federal and State grant programs.
  • Perform special accounting studies and analyses of City activities, prepare special financial statements and reports, and maintain various ledgers.
  • Prepare monthly budgetary and status reports.
  • Supervise accounting division activities in the absence of higher‑level supervisors.
  • Maintain accounts for special funds such as utility funds, revenue sharing trust funds, airport capital projects funds, and special grants.
  • Audit reports from the pension fund agent, prepare statements, and conduct special pension plan studies.
  • Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • Monitor grant compliance, prepare citywide reporting for Federal and State grants, and manage grant program closeout.
  • Provide training and support to departments regarding grant programs, availability, and compliance requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, economics, or related discipline and four (4) years of accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Certifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (desirable).

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of modern accounting principles, practices, and procedures; ability to apply this to general and plant asset accounting, including Florida Public Service Commission and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requirements.
  • Knowledge of the principles, laws, and regulations governing municipal financial operations.
  • Knowledge of modern business management practices.
  • Knowledge of EDP methods and procedures.
  • Ability to devise and apply modern accounting procedures.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct the installation of accounting systems and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret fiscal and accounting data and prepare appropriate statements and reports.
  • Ability to plan, train, and supervise professional and sub‑professional assistants.
Physical and Environmental Requirements

Work may require prolonged sitting and attendance at meetings outside regular business hours. Physical assessment may be required.
