Building Code Inspector II

Classification

Minimum Requirements:

High school and six (6) years of experience in inspection or the construction trades. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Responsibilities

Perform on-site construction inspections to ensure compliance with adopted codes, approved plans, and specifications.

Perform in-depth safety plan reviews for all new construction and renovation projects for facilities associated with UF.

Prepare written reports approving or rejecting construction plans in accordance with the adopted codes.

Approve installation of materials and methods for compliance with adopted codes.

Record inspection results and plan review comments in permit tracking software.

Operate UF/state vehicle(s) to and from inspection sites.

Make decisions as to code interpretations in area of expertise.

Represent the department in area of expertise to various groups, such as architects, engineers, contractors, or subcontractors.

Licensed in two or more disciplines as a building, plumbing, mechanical, fire safety, or electrical inspector.

Licensed as a building, plumbing, mechanical, fire or electrical plans reviewer by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

Post-offer health assessment required.

Valid Florida driver license required.

Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday, 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM
  • 40 hours/week
  • Travel to and from inspection site locations

This position is designated as an Essential Employee for the University, as the employee's response immediately following an emergency event in which the continuation of critical and essential services is needed.

Expected Salary

Commensurate with education and experience.

Required Qualifications

High school and six (6) years of experience in inspection or the construction trades. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred

Education & Training: Bachelor's degree in building construction.

Experience: Five (5) years construction experience in each field of experience for which certified inspector and plan reviewer. Preference will be given to applicants with licensure as a Fire Safety Inspector and Fire Safety Plan Reviewer.

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Florida building, mechanical, plumbing, and/or electrical codes.
  • Knowledge of current construction procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper building inspection procedures.
  • Knowledge of Florida state statutes and regulations applying to construction related projects.
Abilities
  • Ability to read building blueprints and floor plans.
  • Ability to read and understand construction specifications.
  • Ability to take accurate measurements.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Physical Qualifications
  • Ability to climb.
  • Ability to bend repeatedly.
  • Ability to work in excessively noisy areas.
