Position Summary

The Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine is a licensed independent practitioner who is responsible for managing health problems and coordinating health care for Island Doctors patients in accordance with State and Federal rules, regulations, and standards of care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with the primary healthcare team to provide patients with primary medical care services within the standard of care for primary care patients.
  • Order laboratory and radiology tests and refer patients to specialists when appropriate.
  • Analyze reports, test results, medical records and examinations to diagnose the condition of patients and propose treatment options.
  • Prescribe pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented medical conditions.
  • Discuss potential side effects of medication/treatment with patients and ensure that all allergy information is up to date before prescribing.
  • Provide advice to patients for lifestyle and diet changes that may improve their health or help to treat the health issue they are experiencing.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, ongoing quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all federal and state health information privacy laws.
  • Record complete, timely, and legible medical records.
  • Assist with training and compliance actions.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Minimum Education Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of medicine.
  • Current medical doctor (MD) or osteopathic doctor (DO) licensure.
  • Strong computer skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • At least one year of experience in a similar position is desired.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Standing for long periods; bending, reaching, and walking to look for charts; finger dexterity for accurate terminal input; visual acuity to work in front of a video display terminal; ability to cope with heavy workload volume; ability to block outside noise and traffic movement for concentration; ability to work in a physically small and highly exposed traffic area.

Interdepartmental Requirements
  • Establish a good working relationship with other departments.
  • Establish a good rapport with peers in the office.
  • Assist other staff members whenever possible.
  • Request other work as needed when primary duties are completed.
  • Comply with other duties as requested by supervisors.
Public Relations Requirements
  • Represent the practice in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Dress in proper office attire.
  • Divulge absolutely no confidential information to unauthorized individuals.
  • Use proper telephone courtesy when answering phone.
Other Requirements
  • Display knowledge of departmental and office policies and procedures.
  • Display knowledge of Disaster Plan and Fire Plan.
  • Arrive to work on time.
  • Adhere to schedule unless approved by supervisor.
  • Stay in work area unless otherwise directed.
