GENERAL SUMMARY

The coordinator of youth ministry (CYM) and young adult ministry (YAM) provides vision and coordination for the parish's efforts in ministry to young people from 7th through 12th grades. This includes high school and middle school weekly or bi-weekly gatherings, service projects for the parish and the wider community, catechesis and sacramental preparation (Confirmation). In addition, this role integrates adolescent catechesis into a comprehensive ministry to, with, by and for young people guided by the principles of the USCCB document Renewing the Vision.

DUTIES

AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Attend regular staff meetings.
  • Participate in staff and parish planning.
  • Communicate youth & young adult ministry activities to parish and staff.
  • Seek staff input in planning youth ministry activities.
  • Serve as resource to parish staff on issues related to youth and young adult ministry.
  • Provide guidance and support to the established Young Adult Group (18-40) by being a liaison, resource, and guide to their goals, and activities.
  • Facilitate the Youth Leadership Team, which is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive youth ministry program.
  • Serve on the appropriate parish committees (e.g., Faith Formation, Evangelization) to integrate youth ministry into the life of the parish as a whole.
  • Coordinate the recruitment, train, support, and evaluate volunteers in the youth ministry program.
  • Develop a systematic and intentional plan for adolescent catechesis that utilizes a creative variety of formats, settings, and time frames.
  • Seek opportunities for exchange and cooperation with ecumenical youth groups.
  • Provide resources (print, video, diocesan events) for effective programming.
  • Provide appropriate training for adults and young people in leadership positions.
  • Coordinate the Christian formation and Confirmation programs with the parish DFFF.
  • Foster the involvement of young people in the life of the parish, including serving on various parish committees and being involved in parish activities, service and outreach.
  • Coordinate outreach to and evangelization of all young people in the parish.
  • Provide appropriate services and outreach programs for parents of adolescents.
  • Serve as the liaison with the diocesan office of youth ministry by attending meetings, training programs and services as provided.
  • Seek continuing formation and training opportunities for professional development.
  • Screen all youth ministry volunteers for safe environment requirements; implement and facilitate the Circle of Grace safety program across all youth ministry activities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Bachelor's Degree in Pastoral Ministry, Religious Education, or Theology or related field;
    National Certification in Youth Ministry preferred.
  • Must be a Catholic in good standing who models Gospel values, has an engaged spirituality, and actively participates in parish life.
  • Prior experience in Youth Ministry is preferred.
  • Ability to work with and respect people of different backgrounds.
  • Evenings and weekends.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • A willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Must pass a background check and attend safe environment training (Protecting God's Children).
Language Skills

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, vendors, employees, and the public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
