About This RoleThe University of Florida College of Medicine (COM) seeks an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. Those in this role provide assistance to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in administering the duties of the Office of Student Affairs, including oversight and leadership in support of medical students’ educational experience: registration, financial aid, career development, academic counseling, and major events such as graduation.
The role is part of the College of Medicine education leadership team and reports to the Associate Dean for Students Affairs.
The Office of Student Affairs is responsible for administrative oversight of student support services from matriculation to graduation, ensuring all student noncurricular activities and programs are adequately supported and comply with institutional and LCME accreditation requirements. This office works closely with Student Counseling, Student Coaching, Medical Education, Admissions, and other units within the College of Medicine and the broader Health Science Center.
- Assist the Associate Dean in providing leadership and oversight to the academic counseling services, career development programs, learning culture supervision efforts, student organizations and special interest groups, and other support services for UF medical students in accordance with LCME standards.
- Support a culture of community, collaboration, and respect within the Office of Student Affairs and the COM community.
- Assist the Associate Dean in operations of the Office of Student Affairs, including the COM registrar, academic counseling, and staff. Participate in hiring and guiding training for Office staff.
- Provide effective onboarding and transition for first‑year students into medical school, third‑year students into clerkships, and fourth‑year students into Phase III and residency preparation.
- Develop and maintain a longitudinal advising program to position students for a successful match, including coaching and professional identity development.
- Create a leadership program to cultivate leadership skills in elected student leaders and interested students.
- Partner and coordinate with the Jacksonville Regional Medical Campus to assure integrated student support services.
- Provide leadership as needed for the Student Advocacy Committee and Medical College Council.
- Monitor and ensure a positive learning environment across all curriculum phases.
- Engage with and support struggling students to develop a plan of action.
- Collaborate with medical education leadership to establish policies and procedures for the undergraduate medical education program.
- Assist Student Counseling in developing wellness and success activities.
- Participate in the residency application process, including preparation of Medical Student Performance Evaluations aligned with AAMC recommendations and UF College policies.
- Serve as an active member of the Match Success Review Committee.
- Participate in all major events hosted by the Office of Student Affairs.
- Collect, analyze, and report data related to quality reviews, match outcomes, student support services, and graduation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Commensurate with education and experience.
Candidates must be eligible for an Assistant Professor, Associate, or Professor rank appointed in the UF College of Medicine, possess a Ph.d., M.d., or relevant terminal degree, and have three years of experience in medical education.
Preferred Qualifications- Ph.D., M.D., or relevant terminal degree.
- Meets criteria to hold UF COM faculty position.
- Three years’ experience in medical education with educational leadership at some level.
- Knowledgeable of modern student support services.
- Experience in career counseling and mentoring.
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
- Ability to create and oversee a successful team working environment.
- Supervisory experience managing and coordinating work across units.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with diverse groups and individuals.
- Demonstrated dedication to providing opportunities and a welcoming atmosphere for individuals from all backgrounds, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse faculty, student body, and administration.
- Experience in budget and resource management.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and university laws and policies, including FERPA, HIPAA, Title VI, Title IX, and ADA.
- High degree of initiative, discretion, and commitment to excellence.
- Excellent judgment to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
