Assistant or Associate Professor – Space Biology / Astrobiology

Work Type: Full Time

Location: Brevard, Merritt Island, Florida

Position Type: 9‑month tenure‑accruing appointment; 30 % teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and 70 % research within the Microbiology and Cell Science Department (Space Life Sciences Laboratory).

Job Description

The incumbent will design and teach a 3‑credit course in space life sciences at undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor PhD students, and contribute to graduate curriculum development. Responsibilities also include curriculum development for new BS, MS, and PhD programs in space sciences, conducting research in space biology, space biomanufacturing, and/or astrobiology (including extremophile research), seeking competitive grant funding, and engaging in extension activities.

Faculty are expected to support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education, and to engage in scholarly activities related to instruction, advising, curriculum revision, and professional development.

Required Qualifications
  • A doctorate (or foreign equivalent) in life sciences with a strong background in space biology and/or astrobiology.
  • Demonstrated ability in verbal/written communication and procurement of extramural funding.
  • Commitment to the mission of the Land‑Grant system and University core values.
  • Experience publishing peer‑reviewed papers as first author.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • Successful grant writing record.
