Duties and Responsibilities

The Associate Deans for Academic Programs report to the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). The Associate Deans provide college-wide leadership for the undergraduate and graduate academic programs in CALS. The Associate Deans work with administrators, faculty, staff, and students for continued development, improvement, and coordination of academic programs.

Academic programs originate from 13 departments and two schools. The Associate Deans are members of the faculty in IFAS.

The current announcement is for an Associate Dean to provide college-wide and campus leadership on matters related primarily to online and distance education, teaching and professional development, and undergraduate support and special programs. Specific areas of responsibility include support of off-campus undergraduate programs, UF Online programs, and self-funded certificates and degrees. Liaising with the UF International Center and the IFAS Global Food Systems Institute, the incumbent supports international activities and programs such as CALS study abroad, international exchange program development and support, and federal compliance support for international students.

The incumbent is substantially involved in faculty professional development support (e.g., CALS Teacher's College, CALS Teaching Resource Center, Roche Teaching Scholars, CALS Teaching Enhancement Symposium, and coordination of teaching and advising award nominations and submissions). This position provides support for undergraduate research through coordination of the University Scholars Program, the CALS Honors Scholars Certificate Program, and the IFAS Research Internships.

This position collaborates with program leaders at UF/IFAS Institutes, Centers and programs on issues related to CALS mission and goals, including the development of strategic teaching initiatives that build upon institutional strengths. It supports professional development of faculty at all career stages, including but not limited to preparing evaluative letters for promotion and tenure, third year progress assessment, and post-tenure review dossiers of statewide faculty.

The incumbent represents the Dean for CALS at UF, UF/IFAS, and external functions as requested. In accordance with the UF/IFAS land-grant mission, all UF/IFAS faculty are expected to be supportive and engaged in all three mission areas – Research, Teaching and Extension – regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.

Required Qualifications

Internal search - open to current permanent UF faculty only. Applicants must have an earned doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in agriculture, food, natural resources, life sciences, or a closely related discipline and be qualified for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor in one of the departments in CALS based upon an exemplary record of innovative approaches to teaching, research, and/or extension.

Applicants should have significant experience in instruction and advising and be recognized within their own field of specialization. Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication and the ability to work with administrators, faculty, and students is required.
