Gainesville Regional Utilities, the 5th largest municipal electric utility in Florida, is seeking an Electrical Engineer (Engineer III) who will perform independent, professional and technical engineering work for an electric utility with limited supervision. The successful candidate will support a wide variety of engineering projects, both as an individual contributor, project leader, and team leader.

To be considered for this position you must have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field, from an ABET accredited educational institution. A Level Engineer III position will require at least 4 years experience as an engineer with emphasis on protection and controls associated with power substations. We will consider an under‑fill with a less experienced engineer who is willing to learn and progress.

What you’ll be doing
  • Review and develop protective relay settings for protection of substation equipment, transmission lines and distribution lines.
  • Review, update and develop electrical drawings (AutoCAD & PDF) for power substation projects of varying complexity (AC schematics, DC schematics and wiring diagrams).
  • Lead and organize data for compliance tasks on a regular basis.
  • Work in a team atmosphere to develop project scopes that will be used to direct internal and/or external resources.
  • Develop technical specifications and work with vendors and contractors to obtain quotes.
  • Build relationships with internal and external resources.
  • Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
Essential Job Functions
  • Prepare engineering analyses and specifications, process studies, research investigations, and reports.
  • Negotiate and maintain effective relationships with customers, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Design, prepare, and review plans, specifications, and detailed cost estimates for changes, additions, and deletions to the applicable area of assignment.
  • Inspect construction work to ensure proper materials, workmanship, and compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Assist in providing consultative services to management regarding environmental practices.
  • Assist in preparing departmental budget estimates.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution, or Master’s degree with 3 years of experience.

Professional

Experience:

Minimum 4 years of experience as an engineer, emphasis on protection and controls of power substations.

Certifications or Licenses: Valid Florida Class E Driver’s License required. Valid State of Florida “Engineering Intern” license may be required for certain areas. Professional Engineer license preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and specialized engineering software. Ability to collaborate, communicate orally and in writing, and work effectively with elected officials and other agencies.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

May work at heights over 100 ft., use personal protective equipment, perform outdoor tasks under varying climatic conditions, and handle hazardous chemicals.
