Job OverviewAre you an experienced engineer with a passion for mentorship and a drive to build your community? The City of Gainesville Public Works Department is looking for a Supervising Engineer to lead our capital project delivery and development review team. Reporting directly to the City Engineer, you’ll be leading the people and projects that define our City’s public infrastructure. You will spend over 50% of your time empowering a talented team of engineers and technical specialists, providing the technical guidance and motivation they need to succeed.
You will lead Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) from planning/project development and environmental (PD&E) phase through construction completion, including scoping, feasibility, due diligence, public involvement, land rights acquisition, surveying, design, procurement of services and construction engineering and inspections (CEI).
Experience with state and federally funded projects is a plus, as you will navigate the requirements of state and federal grants to bring grant-funded projects to life. You will also oversee the engineering review of private development projects to ensure elements including public infrastructure, site design, and stormwater management align with the City’s Land Development Code, Engineering Design and Construction Manual, and other applicable regulations and standards.
Responsibilities- Supervising engineering work coordinating teams of Public Works engineers, and/or technical support specialists.
- Planning, developing, coordinating and directing large or major scope projects.
- Coordinating preparation, review and approval of engineering analyses, specifications and reports for complex projects.
- Formulating operating policies.
- Supervising, coordinating and training engineering groups (Level I–IV) and/or technical support specialists.
- Offering guidance, assistance and interpretation to others.
- Recommending selection, promotion, discharge, and other appropriate personnel actions.
- Designing, evaluating and coordinating engineering projects with internal departments, outside consultants and contractors on complex projects.
- Interpreting, organizing and executing assignments.
- Maintaining extensive contacts with key engineers and officials of other organizations, requiring persuasion and negotiation of critical issues.
- Coaching, motivating and building an effective support staff by evaluating performance and developing customized performance management plans.
- Keeping senior management informed of project status.
- Attending work on a continuous and regular basis.
- Graduation from an ABET accredited four‑year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.
- At least eight years of engineering experience in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
- Up to six months of experience may be recognized for appropriate co‑op time and/or an advanced degree in engineering or business.
- Additional experience may be recognized for a Master’s Degree from an ABET accredited institution.
- Knowledge and experience with Engineering Economic Analysis and Engineering Project Management.
- Supervisory training or experience required.
- Valid State of Florida Professional Engineer licence required.
Meet the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) requirements as defined in Chapter 471 of the Florida Statute. Valid State of Florida Professional Engineer license required.
