Responsibilities
  • Shift supervisor:
    Supervise all employees (sworn and non-sworn) assigned to work in the UFPD Communications Center. Supervise, train, advise, and counsel employees. Regulate activities and provide instruction regarding duties of Police Communications Operators. Conduct briefings prior to shift assignments, inspect employees, explain new or revised department orders and directives, and conduct routine or newly developed procedures for call taking, police dispatching, and teletype functions.

    Ensure all calls are handled quickly and professionally. Serve as Communications Training Officer, training personnel in call taking, dispatching, and teletype procedures. Review, evaluate, and document subordinates’ work performance, evaluations, and schedules. Receive and process complaints, schedule conflicts, or grievances, exercise authority to take corrective action or recommend disciplinary measures, and participate in the activation of emergency notifications.
  • Operate UFPD Communications Center, providing radio communication support to sworn and non-sworn employees. Maintain radio/telephone links between field officers, base station, supervisors, emergency services, and other agencies. Perform duties associated with the FCIC/NCIC teletype, modify records in state and national computer databases, receive and evaluate calls for both emergency and non-emergency police assistance, input call information using computer-assisted dispatch or manual systems, refer callers to appropriate agencies, notify parties of complaints or required actions, update unit status, transmit emergency service requests, and retrieve various data and records.

    Use computer systems to check driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations, stolen item files, warrants, criminal history, and missing persons listings. Monitor fire and security alarm systems (Lenel, SIS, RMS, UFTR), verify information required by field units using computer, radio, and telephone, and contact other public safety agencies for assistance. Prepare departmental logs, reports, and forms.
  • Provide support to special events, requiring extended periods of standing or sitting indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Assess failure of computer and radio systems, take necessary action, and make appropriate notifications. Participate in interviewing job applicants. Complete emergency notification messages for in-progress or dangerous situations that pose an immediate threat to campus health and safety.
  • Attend and/or conduct training classes.
  • Prepare detailed records and reports in a timely manner.
  • Provide testimony and/or appear in judicial proceedings as a witness regarding how complaints were received and processed.
Required Qualifications

A high school diploma and three years of experience with a public safety communications center, supplemented by three years of supervisory experience or equivalent training. Proficiency in typing, State certification on the NCIC/FCIC computer system required within six months of employment, and Florida Department of Health E911 Telecommunicator certification required. Must type at least 35 words per minute.

Preferred Knowledge
  • Considerable experience operating a public safety communications center.
  • Knowledge of training, educational and supervisory methods, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of public safety dispatch operations—including scheduling, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating work.
  • Familiarity with department policies and procedures.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
Preferred Ability
  • Evaluate subordinates’ performance and behavior, providing constructive feedback and coaching.
  • Provide supervision, leadership, and direction to subordinates.
  • Maintain and supervise dispatching procedures, coordinating with local agencies as needed.
