The Gainesville Police Department is hiring Police Officers to protect life and property through the enforcement of Federal, State, and Local laws. Responsibilities include prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes; maintaining law and order; and performing duties under limited supervision.
Essential Job Functions- Patrol a designated area by vehicle or foot.
- Disperse unruly crowds at public gatherings.
- Report hazards or abandoned vehicles.
- Use computers to type reports and documents.
- Direct and reroute traffic around emergencies.
- Maintain assigned equipment and workstation.
- Effectively interact and communicate with the public.
- Apply federal, state, and local laws, policy, and procedures.
- Participate in court-related processes.
- Conduct criminal and crash investigations, securing scenes and evidence.
- Interview, interrogate, and acquire statements.
- Participate in searches, seizures, and arrests.
- Perform security and escort duties.
- Render first aid.
- Respond under emergency conditions.
- Issue warnings or traffic tickets.
- Maintain logs and other records in desk officer duties as assigned.
- Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.
- Act as training officer for recruits and certified officers.
- Enforce drug policy in designated areas.
- Supervise employees in safety-sensitive functions for the Drug-Free Workplace Program.
- Access or handle information related to criminal investigations, especially drug activity.
- Chauffeure other employees as required.
- Transport, mix, handle, or use hazardous materials.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least one year of cumulative work experience (community service or volunteer work considered).
Certifications or Licenses
- Valid State of Florida driver license with a good driving record.
- Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission’s Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of Florida Statutes and City ordinances.
- Knowledge of City geography.
- Skill in use and care of firearms and police vehicles.
- Effective interpersonal communication and reporting skills.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and determine appropriate action under stress.
- Ability to handle difficult situations calmly and respectfully.
- Proficiency with computers and relevant software.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
Police officers must maintain a level of physical fitness that enables them to perform essential duties effectively. Work may involve outdoor tasks under varying climatic conditions and heavy traffic environments.
