Key Terms and Compensation

Dual certified Firefighter/Paramedic: $56,926.00 Annually

Additional $10,000 annually as lead medic on rescue: $66,926.00 Annually

Cleared Single Cert Paramedic: $49,060.00 Annually

Paramedic Trainee: $40,560.00 Annually

Special Enrollment and Certification Requirements

If currently enrolled in Paramedic School, proof of enrollment must be submitted with application. A written letter from the school or school instructor is acceptable and must contain the start and end date of the program. Program must be completed prior to the job offer date of June 1, 2026.

Single Cert Paramedic Trainee will be required to complete Fire Standards within 1 year.

Paramedic Trainee Qualifications and Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen & physical examination and successful completion of all applicable background checks pre-hire and ongoing.

Documentation required with submission:

  • A sworn affidavit attesting to the non-use of tobacco products (tobacco affidavit).
  • A color copy of a Valid Florida Driver License and Motor Vehicle Record that meets county policy requirements. MVR reviews will be completed prior to employment. A history of moving violations, at-fault accidents, or DUI-related issues may disqualify.
  • Successful applicants must meet all requirements for Drivers as listed in Florida Statutes 401.281.
  • Current certifications to submit (if possessed):

  • State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance
  • State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification
  • State of Florida Paramedic Certification
  • American Heart Association BLS - CPR & AED Card (or BLS for Healthcare Provider)
  • American Heart Association ACLS Card (or ALS for Healthcare Provider)
  • Application Process and Steps

    There are four (4) steps in the application process:

  • Complete the Alachua County Employment Application and upload all required documents by Friday, March 6, 2026.
  • Complete and pass Alachua County FPAT or possess a current CPAT. Valid CPAT and/or FPAT certificates must be dated within 1 year of the application date.
  • After passing FPAT or submitting a valid CPAT, complete the candidate assessment through Public Safety Answers.
  • In-person interview.
  • The candidate assessment can be accessed at the following site and must be completed no later than Friday, March 6, 2026. The assessment is a 15-45 minute self-administered psychometric test.

    On Appointment to Position

    Par medical Trainee Requirements:

    • Firefighter Certification:
      Must complete the State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance within 1 year of employment.
    • Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC):
      Must complete the department-certified 16-hour EVOC course within the first month of employment.
    • Ongoing Certification:
      Continued certification is necessary to maintain employment. Successful completion of a 12-month probationary period is required.

    This is responsible technical work in the Fire Rescue Services Department protecting life and property by performing firefighting, driving apparatus, providing emergency medical aid, handling hazardous materials and fire prevention duties. Duties include transporting crew and equipment, providing immediate care, and firefighting operations as required. Work is performed under standard operating procedures with independent judgment exercised as trained. This position reports to a Lieutenant or Rescue Lieutenant depending on assignment.

    Context and Essential Functions

    Classification: This is an emergency essential classification. All employees may be required to work during disasters or emergencies.

    Responsibilities include customer-focused service, adherence to core values (integrity, honesty, respect, diversity, innovation, accountability, communication), firefighting and EMS duties, vehicle operations, and routine reporting. Safety measures must be observed at all times. Duties also include execution of routine drills, station housekeeping, and general office tasks as required.

    Emergency medical, rescue and fire equipment knowledge; basic life support; fire prevention and suppression techniques; defensive driving; local geography; SOP/SOG knowledge; ability to follow orders and operate complex equipment; ability to work under pressure and maintain relationships with team and other agencies.

    Physical Demands: Regular lifting and moving up to 25-50 pounds commonly, with occasional heavy lifting beyond 100 pounds; vision requirements; and other standard physical requirements.
