Job Summary

A Phlebotomist I provides customer service and skilled specimen collections, ensuring the validity and integrity of clinical specimens. Performs blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups. Ensures doctor's orders are executed correctly, handles special specimens for esoteric testing, and processes legal specimens. Works in a fast‑paced environment with frequent exposure to biohazards. Complies with population‑specific guidelines and National Patient Safety Goals.

Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collections for all age groups.
  • Discern appropriate phlebotomy techniques based on patient condition.
  • Follow safety guidelines to protect patient and self.
  • Coordinate special collections with other departments.
  • Deliver clinical specimens efficiently to the laboratory.
  • Operate centrifuge properly.
  • Process outpatients in a timely manner and code laboratory orders with high accuracy.
  • Maintain quality assurance and quality control logs for phlebotomy and specimen processing.
  • Resolve collection issues and route to appropriate personnel.
  • Perform drug‑screen collections following chain‑of‑custody protocols.
  • Assist in training new phlebotomy staff or students, demonstrating techniques and assisting with venipuncture when needed.
  • Maintain ongoing professional growth via continued education and annual competency assessments.
Key Performance Indicators
  • Meet productivity expectations and unit/department level goals aligned with organizational KPIs.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with DNV, mandatory education, and similar requirements.
  • Promote safety, manage hazards, and maintain patient, visitor, and staff safety.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Licensure or certification:
    Preferred ASCP, National Phlebotomy Association, American Medical Technologist, National Performance Specialist, National Health career Association.
  • Prior laboratory experience as a lab assistant preferred.
  • Verbal and written communication skills; proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office.
  • Manual dexterity, problem‑solving ability, and ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to perform under stressful emergency medical situations.
