Overview

The Manager of Inpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Inpatient is responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership, operational oversight, and strategic execution of the inpatient CDI program. This role ensures the integrity, accuracy, completeness, and consistency of clinical documentation to support quality outcomes, severity of illness (SOI), risk of mortality (ROM), case mix index (CMI), compliant reimbursement, and regulatory compliance. The Manager collaborates closely with physicians, nursing leadership, coding, case management, quality, utilization management, finance, compliance, and health information management teams to optimize documentation and coding practices.

The position supervises CDI professionals, monitors key performance indicators, drives process improvement initiatives, and promotes physician engagement to enhance documentation quality across the enterprise.

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related healthcare field.
  • Master’s degree in nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of Clinical Documentation Integrity experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of progressive leadership experience in CDI, coding, case management, utilization management, health information management, or related healthcare operations.
  • Experience in an integrated delivery system, academic medical center, or large mult‑hospital health system preferred.
  • Experience working with physician engagement and clinical documentation improvement initiatives required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of inpatient CDI practices and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding principles.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and team development skills.
  • Ability to influence physician practice through education and collaboration.
  • Experience utilizing Epic and CDI technology platforms required.
License/Certification/Registration
  • One of the following required:
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RIT)
  • Medical Degree (MD/DO)
  • Other clinically licensed healthcare professional
  • Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) preferred.
  • Certified Documentation Expert Outpatient (CDEO) preferred.
  • Clinical Documentation Integrity Practitioner (CDIP) preferred.
  • Lean/Six Sigma preferred.
  • Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) preferred.
Other Qualifications
  • Ability to interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into operational processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and lead through organizational change.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • MS-DRG assignment
  • APR-DRG methodologies
  • SOI/ROM
  • Quality reporting programs
  • Clinical validation concepts
  • CMS reimbursement methodologies
  • Regulatory compliance requirements
