Position Summary
Senior Claims Attorney reports to the Deputy Administrator and manages the intake, investigation, resolution, and litigation of all covered claims and injuries within the Self‑Insurance Program.
Responsibilities- Intake, processing, and disposition of all incidents reported to the Self‑Insurance Program; record incidents in the Riskonnect database and conduct interviews, records reviews, and analysis.
- Identify, investigate, analyze, and evaluate medical, legal, and fiscal issues of covered claims and potential or asserted claims against SIP participants.
- Coordinate, manage, and resolve (denial, settlement, or defense) all covered claims, including pre‑suit legal and administrative procedures required by Florida statutes.
- Coordinate and manage litigation processes in defense of lawsuits based on covered claims.
- Identify risk factors that cause or contribute to claims and lawsuits, and work with SIP Loss Prevention staff to mitigate or remove those risks.
- Collaborate daily with participants including the University of Florida Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine;
Shands Jacksonville Medical Center;
Florida State University College of Medicine;
University of Central Florida College of Medicine;
Florida International University College of Medicine;
Florida Atlantic University College of Medicine, and their affiliated facilities. - Travel extensively to attend depositions, mediations, trainings, and meetings throughout the United States and occasionally abroad.
- Provide investigative and administrative support for healthcare providers facing administrative proceedings related to their licenses; facilitate procurement of legal counsel and preparation of witnesses.
- Law degree (LLB or JD) and three years of experience in the legal, medical, or healthcare fields.
- Knowledge of tort law, healthcare systems, risk management techniques, and medical malpractice claims handling.
- Demonstrated competency in medical research and internet research.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work under pressure in a multitasking environment, and the ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Florida (for attorney incumbents) and ability to prepare witnesses for unsworn statements, depositions, and legal research.
Extensive travel is required, including meetings with and preparation of expert witnesses, depositions across the United States and occasionally in foreign countries.
