Job Description:

The Department of Animal Sciences Equine Sciences Center is seeking a Farm Supervisor. This position will serve directly under and report to the Academic Programs Specialist/Farm Manager. The Farm Supervisor will be responsible for assisting the Farm Manager with the day-to-day operations of the Equine Sciences Center and Horse Teaching Unit and working directly with the farm crews. This individual will be key in decision making when the Farm Manager is unavailable.

Both the manager and supervisor will work closely together to plan improvement projects and help both units support the teaching, research and extension functions of the department. The Farm Supervisor will have a general understanding of the farm budget to help monitor farm expenditures on a weekly basis. It is expected that this individual will have a strong background in farm and equipment maintenance with some understanding of equine reproduction and hay field management.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Organize, direct, and directly participate with farm personnel in the daily care and maintenance of the Center's animals, facilities and grounds. Will utilize state vehicle on a regular basis to pick up farm supplies, hay and feed; haul equipment between farms and to and from mechanic; haul horses between farms as well as to and from vet appointment.

* Supervises and maintains proper farm safety and sanitary conditions in accordance with the Division of Environmental Health and Safety/Occupational and Research Safety.

* Work with the Farm Manager to liaise with IFAS Facilities Planning and Operations on the maintenance and renovation of the Center's facilities.

* Assist with the unit's forage production

* Perform maintenance on farm equipment and vehicles when possible.

* Work with the Farm Manager to breed mares and manage the foal crop.

* Assist with classes

* Serve as operational instructor for new employees, laborers, and volunteers.

* Provide customer service to prospective horse buyers and donors of the Equine Sciences Program.

Normal

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday 7:00am until 4:00pm or 8:00am until 5:00pm. Some nights and weekends will be required. Employee will be asked to adjust schedule to meet operational requirements. This is an essential position.

Expected Salary:

$47,000 - $48,000 annually; commensurate with experience

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience working on an agricultural operation, including supervision of others. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required years of experience.

Valid driver's license

Preferred:

Experience in the supervision of employees

B.S. degree in Animal Sciences or related field

Ability to effectively communicate with employees, faculty, students and other stakeholders both verbally and in written form

Proven ability to work within a team and independently

Extensive experience handling horses and livestock

Computer skills:
Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.

Experience operating and maintaining farm equipment

Demonstrated leadership abilities and excellent interpersonal skills

Knowledge of and familiarity with the equine industry

Ability to perform cost analysis and negotiate price structures for upcoming projects

Knowledge of forage production

Knowledge of facility and equipment maintenance

Knowledge and experience in the breeding management of broodmares

Knowledge of foal care
