Responsible for assisting the Farm Manager with daily operations of the Equine Sciences Center and Horse Teaching Unit. Shifts leadership when the Farm Manager is unavailable. Coordinates improvement projects, supports teaching, research, and extension functions, monitors budget expenditures, and manages farm and equipment maintenance. Requires background in equine reproduction, hay field management, and experience with farm crews.
Key Responsibilities- Organize, direct, and assist farm personnel in daily care and maintenance of animals, facilities, and grounds. Use state vehicle to transport supplies, hay, feed, equipment, horses, and vet appointments.
- Supervise and maintain farm safety and sanitary conditions in compliance with environmental health and safety regulations.
- Coordinate with IFAS Facilities Planning and Operations on maintenance and renovation of facilities.
- Assist with forage production.
- Perform maintenance on farm equipment and vehicles when possible.
- Collaborate on breeding program with Farm Manager, manage foal crop.
- Support classes and serve as operational instructor for new employees, laborers, and volunteers.
- Provide customer service to prospective horse buyers and donors of the Equine Sciences Program.
Monday – Friday 7:00 am to 4:00 pm or 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Occasional nights and weekends required; schedule may be adjusted to meet operational needs.
Salary$47,000 – $48,000 annually; commensurate with experience.
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience on an agricultural operation, including supervision.
- Valid driver's license.
- Experience supervising employees.
- B.S. degree in Animal Sciences or related field (preferred).
- Strong communication skills, verbal and written.
- Teamwork and independent work ability.
- Extensive experience handling horses and livestock.
- Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel.
- Experience operating and maintaining farm equipment.
- Leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of equine industry, forage production, facility and equipment maintenance.
- Experience in breeding management of broodmares; foal care.
- Ability to perform cost analysis and negotiate price structures for projects.
