CHIEF OF STAFF
Pay Range: $117,719 – $170,039 (full‑time). Variable pay eligibility based on production, subject to state exceptions. The range reflects general hiring levels and may vary by experience, skill, education, location, and schedule. Job Purpose and FunctionThe Chief of Staff manages the hospital to ensure the highest quality of veterinary care, exceptional client service, associate engagement, and maximum productivity of the veterinary medical team. The role advocates for pets and their quality of life, builds long‑term relationships with clients, and educates both clients and associates on all aspects of pet health. Partnership with the Practice Manager (if applicable) and other leadership provides an effective, productive veterinary team, a safe and engaging environment, and improved medical quality and business performance.
EssentialResponsibilities and Tasks
The ratio of time spent on leadership duties versus practicing veterinary responsibilities varies with hospital demands. On average, 20‑30% of time is allocated to leadership responsibilities and 70‑80% to veterinary duties. The Chief of Staff must prioritize duties each day to sustain hospital productivity.
Leadership Responsibilities (20‑30% of time)- Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
- Partner with the Practice Manager to operate an effective, productive, and profitable hospital while promoting the Banfield brand.
- Train the team on Banfield guidelines and practices, supervise associates, and ensure compliance.
- Oversee and train associates on exceptional client service, including education about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, and hospital services. Resolve client issues effectively.
- Identify bottlenecks, formulate solutions, and remove barriers in medical operations.
- Collaborate with the Medical Director, Field Director, and Practice Manager to interview, hire, coach, mentor, discipline, or terminate hospital associates.
- Lead and mentor Associate Veterinarians to fulfill professional potential and deliver high‑quality medical care, client service, and business results.
- Work with the Medical Director to develop professional development plans (PDPs) and focus teams on practice priorities.
- Create and maintain veterinarian schedules and coordinate with the Practice Manager for associate scheduling, including time‑off and CE planning.
- Maintain effective communication between associates, clients, field leadership, and Central Team Support. Act as a liaison during routine hospital team meetings and share business information.
- Provide inspirational leadership, fostering a collaborative environment and high‑quality care.
- Develop annual planning, budgeting, and productivity goals with the Practice Manager, Field Director, and Medical Director.
- Participate in market‑level teams, discussions, and initiatives. Execute market objectives, goals, strategies, and measurements (OGSMs).
- Support financial results for the assigned hospital and develop technical medical skills for veterinary assistants/technicians.
- Enforce Banfield dress and grooming guidelines and provide leadership to other hospitals as needed.
- Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and all applicable laws.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Establish trust and client confidence through preventive care, complete diagnostic workups, thorough treatment plans, clear home‑care instructions, and scheduled follow‑ups.
- Assimilate information from history, physical examination, and diagnostics to reach effective clinical decisions.
- Practice evidence‑based medicine and preventive care when data or guidelines exist; exercise sound judgment otherwise.
- Comply with the State Veterinary Practice Act, federal/state controlled‑substance laws, Banfield Code of Ethics, and maintain accurate medical records.
