- Operator I: High school diploma or equivalent and one year of appropriate experience. Vocational/technical training may substitute. Current class C wastewater operator’s certificate (Florida Statutes 403.101, 468.540, 552, Regulation 61E1241, F.A.C.).
- Operator II: High school diploma or equivalent and three years of appropriate experience. Vocational/technical training may substitute. Current class B wastewater operator’s certificate (Florida Statutes 403.101, 468.540, 552, Regulation 61E1241, F.A.C.).
- Operator III: High school diploma or equivalent and five years of appropriate experience. Vocational/technical training may substitute. Current class A wastewater operator’s certificate (Florida Statutes 403.101, 468.540, 552, Regulation 61E1241, F.A.C.).
Operate the Wastewater Treatment Plant independently and safely, maintaining facility discharge compliance. Record required instrumentation readings, review data, and take corrective action based on analysis. Perform laboratory sample collection and analysis, and adjust plant operations accordingly.
Monitor facility systems, switch processes from automatic to manual operation as necessary, and conduct system checkout procedures and calibrations. Adjust equipment as required. Record keeping includes data entry, logbooks, checklists, lab and calibration sheets.
Perform routine cleaning and painting of all facility systems: buildings, tanks, equipment, flumes, etc. Operate and maintain sludge de‑watering equipment. Maintain plant operation and security status during weekends, holidays, and after normal working hours. Periodically drive UF vehicle and provide tours to public, students, and faculty.
Perform preventive or repair maintenance on assigned equipment necessary for plant operations with and/or without assistance of maintenance and instrumentation personnel. Train operations staff when required.
Proof of a State of Florida Class E operator's license required. Valid Florida Class “A”, “B” or “C” wastewater operators certification required. THIS POSITION REQUIRES A POST OFFER HEALTH ASSESSMENT AND CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK.
Normal Work Schedule4 Days/Week – 10 Hours/Day; either Sun‑Wed or Wed‑Sat (Midnight 0000‑1000, Day 0600‑1600, Evening 1400‑0000). Can rotate or work other shifts and/or 12 hours as needed. May work a four‑day shift rotation and/or a five‑day shift schedule, on call as required and emergencies.

Treatment Plant Operator I – $21.50 hourly based on experience
Treatment Plant Operator II – $24.66 hourly based on experience
Treatment Plant Operator III – $27.50 hourly based on experience
Required QualificationsRequirements and position level will be based on skill and experience level applicant selected.
Operator I, II, III requirements repeated as above.
Preferred SkillsKnowledge of wastewater process control principles, use of hand tools, computer use and safety rules.
Skills in chemistry, biology, mechanical working, process control and computer programs (MS Suite, data management, SCADA, etc.).
