About the Role

The Nurse Manager (NM) functions as the first‑line administrative nurse leader with primary responsibility for overseeing daily patient care operations and budget. The NM has 24‑hour accountability for care delivery of assigned unit(s), is proficient in the electronic health record and other technological systems, and applies management principles to ensure smooth operations. The NM provides independent judgment and decision‑making in areas of budget, personnel, patient services, physician relations, and administrative or professional programs, and may clinically assist with patient care or assume the charge nurse role when needed.

Responsibilities
  • Co‑ordinate, evaluate and resolve problems and conflicts as they occur.
  • Directly supervise clinical nursing and ancillary personnel assigned to his/her unit(s); ensure effective daily operation on a 24/7 basis by monitoring staffing, equipment, supplies, and services.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures and regulations governing nursing practice; exercise sound judgment in adapting and applying leadership and clinical principles.
  • Plan and accomplish unit goals; collaborate with other nurse leaders to advance the professional practice environment.
  • Communicate NGHS nursing strategic direction and support nursing governance structures, including the Unit Practice Council.
  • Develop and submit capital and operating budgets for approval; achieve budget objectives.
  • Determine human resource needs in partnership with Human Resources; recruit, hire, orient, evaluate and administer performance of all assigned personnel.
  • Develop and administer a master staffing plan; identify educational and training needs and coordinate implementation of training programs.
  • Maintain regulatory readiness by adhering to legal and ethical requirements for accreditation and corporate compliance.
  • Monitor quality of care delivered, including performance improvement, clinical metrics, and risk management activities.
  • Develop and maintain a “customer‑centric” customer service program; conduct unit rounds and address patient, family and physician concerns.
  • Coach staff, recommend and design education and training to meet clinical needs; support staff in maintaining effective interactions with physicians.
  • Coordinate communication among unit team members, attending physicians and ancillary staff to ensure appropriate care planning.
  • Schedule work assignments, set priorities and direct the work of subordinate employees; participate in planning and distribution of patient assignments.
  • Provide progressive discipline when necessary, in line with organizational policies and work rules.
  • Plan and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor resource utilization and ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Develop annual strategic goals and objectives with the reporting leader; research variances and develop action plans to achieve clinical and financial goals.
  • Maintain required unit records, reports and statistics; ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
  • Provide direct patient care, assessing, planning and evaluating patients as needed; conduct daily unit rounds to obtain feedback, address service issues and evaluate staff performance.
  • Participate in mentoring of Registered Nurses and assist in mentoring classes.
Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Licensure:
    Licensed to practice as an RN in Georgia.
  • Certification:
    Professional certification in either a clinical or leadership specialty within two years of hire.
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN or MSN).
  • Experience:

    Three to five years as an RN, preferably in an acute care setting; at least one year of direct supervision of healthcare delivery if combined with leadership experience outside nursing.
  • Other:
    Membership in a professional organization within one month of hire.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Licensure:
    Preferred certification in a clinical or leadership specialty.
  • Education:

    Master’s Degree (Nursing or other) within five years of hire.
  • Experience:

    Two years of nursing leadership experience.
