Unit OverviewThis unit provides care for a variety of heart failure patients, including those with LVADs, low ejection fraction, pulmonary artery catheters, and patients on vital cardiac drips. Clinical monitoring is performed bedside and centrally, with telemetry support from the Central Monitoring Unit. Early ambulation, strict intake and output monitoring, and patient education are integral parts of the unit’s approach.
Key Patient Populations- Hemodynamically stable heart‑failure patients with pulmonary artery (PA) catheter or CVP monitoring
- Acute decompensated heart‑failure patients without shock
- Patients with stable respiration on chronic BiPAP or acute need for BiPAP
- Pre‑ and post‑cardiac catheterization patients
- Pre‑ and post‑cardiac intervention patients, including pacemaker insertions and ICD implantations
- Interventional peripheral and renal angioplasty patients requiring sheath care and removal
- Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) patients who are hemodynamically stable
- Post‑implantation LVAD operative patients
- Patients with venous or arterial sheaths needing care, monitoring, and removal
- Pre‑operative open‑heart surgical patients
- Patients receiving treatment for cardiac arrhythmia, hypotension, antiarrhythmic medications, and vasopressors
- Patients receiving pre‑ and post‑electrophysiology procedure care
The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) reports to the Director of Nursing. The ANM facilitates and assists with all levels of nursing care for patients in the unit, coordinating communication, resolving conflicts, monitoring patient safety, and ensuring high‑quality care. The ANM also manages shift accountability, staffing, scheduling, performance management, and supports leadership initiatives and governance activities.
Core Responsibilities- Coordinate patient care activities and monitor quality of care delivered during shifts
- Conduct daily rounds to identify and address patient, family, and physician concerns
- Maintain competency of nursing staff, ensuring current licensure and certifications
- Coach and evaluate staff, providing education and training aligned with clinical needs
- Facilitate communication between unit members, attending physicians, and ancillary staff
- Plan and distribute patient assignments, support bed huddle deliberations, and ensure effective patient flow
- Coordinate administrative tasks such as PI audits and code cart management
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and evidence‑based standards
- Monitor staff performance, give timely feedback, and provide progressive discipline when required
- Provide direct patient care as needed, including assessment, planning, and evaluation of patients
- Engage with physicians and staff to ensure adherence to evidence‑based practice standards and organizational priorities
- Support and promote a professional practice model encouraging staff participation in clinical standards development
- Registered Nurse license in Georgia
- BSN degree (or within three years of hire)
- Minimum of three years of acute‑care RN experience
- Professional certification in a clinical or leadership specialty within two years of hire
- Preferred Masters degree (nursing or other) within five years of hire
- Preferred charge nurse or supervisory experience
- Preferred membership in a professional organization within three months of hire
- Strong leadership and problem‑solving skills; proactive and visible leadership
- Excellent verbal and written communication, active listening, and customer‑service orientation
- Critical thinking, decisive judgment, ability to work autonomously in a fast‑paced environment
- Change of nursing care to meet emotional needs of patients and staff
- Skill in coaching, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions
- Computer proficiency for unit performance and management systems
- Experience in staffing and scheduling with labor‑productivity target focus
