Registered Nurse Vascular Access

The Registered Nurse Vascular Access is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimal care. Functions or scope of assigned duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assumes responsibility for coordination of vascular care of the Veteran with VA and non-VA facilities.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the medical, psychosocial, and educational needs of the patient in relation to the diagnosis, optimal treatment options, psychosocial impact, and individualized goal-directed plan of care for vascular access.
  • Collaborates with providers and other health team professionals to implement vascular access plan of care.
  • Ensures management, adherence to protocol, and completion of appropriate documentation of vascular access.
  • Considers all characteristics of the Veteran, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences.
  • Assesses and manages extravasations; identifies and manages side effects of phlebitis.
  • Manages IVs, central lines, PICC, Midlines, and port-a-caths for the administration of infusions, chemotherapy, or other medications.
  • Delegates elements of care to the appropriate individual based upon assessed needs, condition, and safety of the patient.
  • Contributes professional nursing perspective in discussions with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.

Pay:
