The OPS Biological Scientist I works for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry, preparing and curating arthropod specimens for identification, research, and long-term preservation in the Florida State Collection of Arthropods. The role involves specimen preparation, microscopy work, DNA sample extraction, collection management, and occasional field travel for pest surveys and emergency programs.
Key qualifications- Bachelor's degree in biological, physical, natural, or agricultural sciences
- Valid driver's license
- Knowledge of digitization, high-resolution photography, and specimen curation procedures
- Skill in using compound microscope and removing insect tissues for DNA analysis
- Ability to travel occasionally including overnight trips and work outdoors in varied weather conditions
- Ability to lift 35 lbs and perform repetitive bending motions
