Title: Institutional Security Specialist I (Requisition No. 876560)
The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) oversees services for child safety, fostering, adoption, domestic violence, adult protective services, refugees, homelessness, mental health, substance abuse, and public assistance. The North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC) is a forensic, mental health rehabilitation facility located in northeast Gainesville.
Position OverviewThe Institutional Security Specialist I is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of NFETC by conducting observations, monitoring surveillance systems, providing escort services, and responding to incidents. The position requires independent judgment, a proactive approach, and exceptional attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct observation posts and monitor access points to prevent escapes and unauthorized intrusion.
- Operate PELCO and CCTV systems; maintain knowledge of surveillance equipment.
- Provide escort and standby assistance as required for residents, staff, and visitors.
- Monitor admissions, discharges, and visitation; verify required paperwork before processing.
- Respond to incidents including use of physical intervention, mechanical restraints, and chemical agents.
- Maintain written logs, resident counts, and operation of the Security Control Room.
- Conduct searches of individuals, rooms, and property; assist in contraband prevention.
- Manage institutional keys and .
- Operate communication equipment (telephones, radios).
- Act as bailiff for court or medication hearings and ensure transport paperwork is accurate.
- Respond to crisis situations such as escape attempts, hostage situations, riots, crimes, and natural disasters.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

- Recognition and assessment of dangerous or potentially dangerous situations.
- Investigation of suspicious or unusual events.
- Independent work with judgment and decision-making.
- Calm and composed emergency response; appropriate action determination.
- Accurate observation and following instructions.
- Establishment and maintenance of effective working relationships.
- At least 19 years of age; U.S. citizen; high school graduate or equivalent.
- Clean felony record; no perjury or false statements; no dishonorable military discharge.
- Processed fingerprints on file; passed physical examination.
- Good moral character; background investigation completed.
- Completed 320‑hour basic recruit training course or equivalent.
