Job Description

Classification

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma (or equivalent) and completion of four (4) years of a Plumbing apprenticeship program, or four (4) years of appropriate experience in plumbing‑related work; appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for required experience.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain supply and discharge piping systems, including opening clogged building and system piping and replacing diaphragms.
  • Act as Team Lead for three or more employees, mentoring and training lower‑level technicians.
  • Coordinate materials and supplies for larger projects.
  • Coordinate paperwork and process for scheduled work outages.
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on faucets, sinks, traps, commodes, urinals, and flush valves.
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on gas, vacuum, air, chilled, steam, and hot water lines.
  • Detect the location of gas leaks and repair accordingly.
  • Install and maintain sump pumps.
  • Repair and replace air compressors, booster pumps, and vacuum pumps.
  • Repair and replace plumbing fixtures, including backflow prev enters.
  • Install, maintain, repair, and replace sanitary and storm sewer lines, including rod sewer lines.
  • Clean and maintain shop and personal plumbing equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • Provide support to other trades and contractors.
  • Install and repair plumbing for laboratories and classrooms, including safety showers, drinking fountains, deionized water, water heaters, point‑of‑use water filters, domestic and reverse osmosis systems, pools, and waterfall fountains.
  • Perform fume hood valve and vacuum breaker repair.

Certification Requirements:

  • Currently NCCER Certified in trade or pass NCCER Knowledge Verification and NCCER Performance Verification within 6 months.
  • Pass trade‑specific Critical Task Assessment within 6 months.
  • Complete NCCER Core within 6 months.
  • State of Florida Class E operator license required.
Normal Work Schedule
  • Schedule may vary depending on location.
  • 40 hours per week.
  • Emergencies as needed; swing shift and on‑call as required.
  • Position considered Essential Personnel as defined by UF Policy.
Salary

Expected Salary: $23.00 to $25.70 hourly.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and completion of four (4) years of a Plumbing apprenticeship program, or four (4) years of appropriate experience in plumbing‑related work; vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate.
  • Currently NCCER Certified in trade or pass NCCER Knowledge Verification and NCCER Plumbing Performance Verification within 4 months.
  • Pass trade‑specific Critical Task Assessment within 4 months.
  • Complete NCCER Core within 6 months.
Preferred Knowledge
  • Vast knowledge of reading mechanical prints and drawings.
  • Excellent working knowledge of plumbing distribution and mechanical codes.
Skills
  • Skill in using pipe cutter, reamer, threading machines, and other specialized tools and equipment.
Abilities
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Solder copper fittings through 4 inches in size without leaks.
  • Operate Propress fitting tools (copper compression and cast iron snap cutters).
  • Locate and repair gas leaks.
  • Repair piping.
  • Replace diaphragms.
  • Maintain chemical readings for pools and fountains.
  • Maintain deionized (DI) and reverse osmosis (RO) systems for HSC.
