Your role at a glanceThe Data Center Technician provides a working level of data center knowledge and is responsible for the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems. The Technician maintains and follows the processes that maximize customer uptime in the most cost‑effective way. This includes identifying and repairing problems quickly, ensuring contractors deliver quality services, and meeting internal customer demands.
ESSENTIALDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop creative approaches to keep operational costs to a minimum, improve efficiency, and implement new strategies.
- Mechanical responsibilities include chilled water systems and components, HVAC systems (roof top units, CRAC/CRAH units, humidification systems).
- Electrical responsibilities include critical power distribution from the Utility/Generator main switch gear through UPS systems to the customer load.
- Fire Life Safety responsibilities include wet sprinkler systems, pre‑action sprinkler systems, and associated detection devices.
- Test performance of electromechanical assemblies and electronic voltmeters.
- Read blueprints, schematics, diagrams, or technical orders to determine methods and sequences of processes.
- Inspect parts for surface defects.
- Install electrical or electronic parts and hardware in housings or assemblies using hand tools.
- Align, fit or assemble component parts using hand or power tools.
- Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facility systems.
- Analyze systems to ensure best practices for both internal and external customers.
- Provide feedback to DCO Engineering on the effectiveness of existing standards and processes.
- Work with contractors and consultants to review quality assurance for all system expansions, corrections, and upgrades.
- Work with the CF Ops Lead Technician to track and complete an aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance program.
- Ensure the data center operates at maximum operational efficiency, analyzing existing conditions, recommending new technologies, and improving overall efficiency and cost reduction.
- Manage systems to avoid unplanned customer‑impacting events.
- Determine maintenance requirements for mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain regular, predictable attendance essential to satisfactory performance.
- Understanding of mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems used in a data center environment including electrical distribution & layout, transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS systems, STS, ATS, PDUs, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH, pre‑action sprinklers, NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and compliance issues including building codes for fire life safety.
- Knowledge of industrial safety best practices (lockout/tag‑out, arc‑flash protection, OSHA, state regulations).
- Familiarity with data trending/tracking and analysis, and ability to utilize PC‑based integrated critical monitoring systems.
- Hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems such as chilled water systems, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, water treatment systems, VFDs, pumps, HVAC equipment, CRAC/CRAH units, humidification systems, water heaters, air filters, BMS & PLC controls, emergency standby diesel generator systems, fuel/oil systems, 480/277 & 208/120 electrical generation & distribution, static UPS systems, double interlock pre‑action systems.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
