JUVENILE JUSTICE DETENTION OFFICER II –

Alachua Regional Juvenile Detention Center, 3440 NE 39th Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32609

Minimum Biweekly Rate of Pay: $1,751.77 (eligible for internal promotion at the minimum of the pay grade or up to 5% of the employee’s current rate, whichever is higher)

This position is highly responsible within the criminal justice system. The employee is expected to perform all duties in an optimal, responsible manner, demonstrate leadership by being a positive role model for staff, youth, and the community, and treat all persons with dignity and respect.

Key responsibilities include:

• Adhering to agency or facility policies and procedures
• Maintaining a safe and secure environment for youth, employees, and visitors
• Ensuring a zero‑tolerance environment for detained youth escapes, abuse, sexual harassment, and inappropriate conduct by staff
• Assisting in the operation of a secure detention center, ensuring safe custody of all detained youth and providing constitutional rights, legal, medical, and mental health support
• Assisting the supervisor with compliance of services and programming to court orders, rules, and quality assurance standards
• Completing training requirements for medication dispensing and using a designated medical health authority or facility nurse
• Performing duties in Master Control, admissions, releases, and transportation as necessary
• Supervising youth in all activities, maintaining control through directives, counseling, and use of Protective Action Response (PAR) as per departmental policies
• Inspections of facility, youth, visitors, and packages for contraband
• Training and coaching employees on duties and policies
• Assuming acting supervisor role in the absence of the supervisor
• Writing reports and maintaining records of incidents, youth movement, and violations of facility operating procedures and statutes
• Preparing detained youth for court appearances and transporting them to medical, criminal justice, social services, and judicial facilities as needed
• Utilizing security and emergency equipment to ensure safety of the detained youth and the facility
• Conducting 10‑minute checks, 5‑minute checks, or Constant Sight and Uninterrupted Sound Supervision for confined or suicidal youth
• Assessing and analyzing information via the Juvenile Justice Information System
• Initiating and maintaining detained youth counts as directed
• Attending and completing all required training; utilizing CPR, AED, and First Aid techniques in emergencies
• Attending required meetings
• Maintaining a valid driver’s license and reporting changes within 72 hours; not operating a state vehicle if license is revoked or suspended
• Complying with Section 215.422, Florida Statutes, Prompt Payment Compliance Law
• Performing other related duties as required

• Prepare and maintain reports and records
• Work effectively with youth, co‑workers, supervisors, and the public
• Maintain good hygiene
• Understand and follow Department and facility policies and procedures

• Determine appropriate level of force
• Observe changes in youth behavior

• Perform good housekeeping tasks and maintain sanitary conditions of the facility

• Be at least 19 years of age
• Be a high school graduate or an equivalent as determined by the Department
• No felony conviction or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statements; no dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States
• Conforms to fingerprinting, background investigation, and other screening requirements (s. 985.644, s. 837.06)
• Submit an affidavit of application under oath; acknowledge the misdemeanor of the second degree for intentional false execution
• Provide state‑and‑federal background clearance and drug screening before employment
• Hold a valid driver’s license (out‑of‑state license must be converted within 30 days of hire); a three‑year acceptable driving record for transportation duties
