JOB SUMMARY

Participates in the daily operation of the bio‑solids compost program. Operates a variety of heavy equipment necessary to load, unload, move, and transport incoming yard waste to safely and efficiently process yard waste through various shredding, composting, separating, mixing, turning, and curing stages. Also performs manual work necessary to support the bio‑solids compost program, and assist with general work as assigned.

ESSENTIAL

JOB FUNCTIONS Composting Operation
  • Operating heavy equipment may include: wheel loader, backhoe, crane, clamshell/boom‑truck, grappler‑arm, windrow turner, shredder, tub grinder, trommel screening machine, and other comparable earth‑moving and composting equipment.
Vehicle Operation
  • Vehicle operation may include pickup truck, dump truck, roll‑off truck, and tractor‑trailer truck.
  • Maintains equipment and tools through proper care and maintenance.
  • May be called upon to transport collected yard waste to the compost disposal facility and properly dispose of the load.
  • Manually collects shredded plastic bag debris, as it is blown across the grounds.
  • Assures the assigned heavy equipment or collection vehicle is properly equipped, cleaned, and serviced; completes daily activity and equipment repair request reports as necessary.
  • Services and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Checks the vehicle or equipment's fuel, oil, and/or coolant levels daily and fills as required.
  • Operates assigned radio communication equipment as provided.
  • Performs daily pre‑trip and post‑trip safety inspection of assigned vehicle or heavy equipment.
  • May act as lead worker or crew leader over lower‑level personnel as assigned.
  • Attends meetings, seminars, schools, etc. as required.
  • All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or G.E.D. (Educational documentation will be requested upon offer of employment).

Ability to read and write at an eighth grade level; comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions; ability to make basic arithmetic computations, and understand numerical data and information, e.g., instructional guides, safety instructions, gauges, thermometer readings, speedometer readings, traffic signs, warning signs etc.

Two years of experience in the operation of heavy duty equipment and vehicles.

Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Employees may be required to work overtime hours, and during emergency events technicians are required to work hours and schedules as assigned.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Possession of a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s license upon offer of employment.

Employment offers to all new hires are contingent upon the job candidates successfully passing background, motor vehicle and reference checks, drug screening, and post job offer physicals (that may include pulmonary testing). All applicants are subject to physical assessments as required by job.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, or walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, jump, step, crawl or crouch; talk and hear; and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally required to lift over 100 pounds with assistance.

Specific vision abilities include close, distant, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is required to perform work in the early morning hours and is exposed to outdoor weather conditions to include high heat and humidity, fumes, noxious odors, dusts, airborne particulates, work near moving mechanical parts, and toxic or caustic chemicals.

The incumbent's working conditions are typically loud when operating equipment.

DISASTER TEAM RESPONSIBILITY

As a disaster team member, the employee is required to be available to work before, during, and after any disaster as directed.
